This problem started developing a few months ago and has been getting worse. First it would just do this. I'd get on the highway and start picking up speed. Auto tranny on my 85' Maro Berlinetta would shift just fine until it got from 3rd to second. I would floor the pedal at like 70-80 MPH to make it shift. It seems like when it tries to shift, it takes the engine out of gear and lets it rev up to redline until I take my foot off the pedal, then it will grab back on to 3rd. I have to do this like 5-10 times before it "grabs" 4th. What I mean by it's been getting worse is that it does it from 2nd to 3rd and even 1st-2nd! I've almost gotten in a couple accidents from it, I'll try to pass a semi or something and I'll floor it, and I get nothing, so there I am in front of a truck going slower with my engine revving. I REALLY need some help on this one.

It does it under/ during what type of acceleration? How is your fluid? Check the level.

Try adjusting the tv cable (throttle valve cable). THIS should help you.
