Poor mans gear marking compound

Whats a good substitution for the good ole yellow gear marking compound. Nobody sells it in town here. I assume prussian blue would work just the same. Someone else mentioined red marine or bearing grease. I've even considered coloring the teeth with a permanent marker (I've done this for gasket matching).

What have you used that works?
