Transmission Feels Loose

I took my car to service and the tech said my transmission needed 1 Litre more oil so he added some and after he added the oil my shifter now feels loose. I can move my shifter back and forth a few centimeters while in gear. Is this normal? Because before the oil adding my shifter wouldn't move while in gear.

Thanks

I read a post like this earlier today.

Seems the general consensus is the tranny cable is loose on the tranny end or the slifter end. The cable may actually be on its way out and might need to be replaced.

Does anyone have pics of such a task? It would be greatly appreciated.

Well I went down to our local pick a part yesterday and did some looking. I picked up a like new tranny cable for about 6$ cdn.

Looks like a simple swap really.

Just to check that this would be the place to focus, I found a car with the cable disconnected from the tranny. It has the same shifter play my car has now. I disconnected the cable from the shifter as well and it just flopped back and forth with the greatest of ease.

Pretty sure that the cable I have is partially seized and has a buckle in it somewhere along the line. The buckle might be giving equivilant slack to being disconnected in places. Seeing as the play is mostly in the drive and overdrive gears.

I'll start work on the replacement this weekend and keep and update as to how it went.

Hope I worded this all correctly :P

Well I checked the shifter inside the car. All was tight and well.

Put the car up and checked under the car.

Here I found the culprit. It was not the shifter cable, but rather the two bolts that hold the bracket onto the transmission.

One was missing, the other one had almost vibrated out, leaving the bracket loose and flapping away. This would surely explain my floppy shifter.

I replaced the missing bolt and tightened the other one. Issue solved. Shifter was now sturdy as ever.

However while I was under there, I checked the cable under the little boot, it was new-looking, shiny and completely intact.

Also, it looks like the cable swap, would I have needed to do it, would have been really easy to do. You can even see where the cable goes up into the center console.

Just goes to show that it really pays to check things and see what is broken before tearing things apart under an assumption.

Re: Transmission Feels Loose

same here:
shifter suddenly felt loose:
cable bracket was holding onto one bolt only which was almost completely unthreaded!!
I'll blue Loctite them because can't tighten like an animal being that they're also compressing the tranny pan gasket.

Re: Transmission Feels Loose

Don't use Loctite if you don't have to.

Instead, if possible, (can't recall whether those particular ones come through the top of the casting) put in longer bolts, tigthen them moderately, and install jam nuts on them from above.
