Broken Speedo Question

I'm hoping for an easy fix for my Son's 1982 Trans Am with a 305H and a 200C automatic.
Ever since we bought the car, the speedo hasn't worked. Today we got into it and I found with cruise control, the car has 2 speedo cables. We removed both, neither were broken. I suspected a possible cruise module problem (wishful thinking), so we picked up a cable for a car with no cruise. So now the cable goes from the tranny to the dash. We first attached the cable in the dash end. When I twirled the other end, the dash speedo needle moved freely. We connected the other end to the tranny. Took it for a ride, and no speedo needle movement. I did a search and found out the speedo gear in the 200C was a problem.
My question is, do I really have to fully disassemble the tranny to replace the speedo gear(s)?

If so, I'm thinking we'll go with a 700R or a TH350.

I just looked thru a 1984 factory manual and it says the 200C speedo driven gear can be replaced with tranny in car, drive gear cannot.
If correct for a 1982 200C, I'll try the driven gear.
Anybody had any luck changing just the driven gear?

Depends on what is broken. The drive gear could be worn out. It's worth a shot to change the driven though.
