thinking abotu putting a positraction unit into my car but there is no way to tell the gear ratio without opening up the housing. does anyone know the stock gear ratio for a 91 camaro rs with the 305 v8? i called idfferent dealerships in my area and they couldnt help me using the vin number. i know it is either a 2 or 3 series ratio but i need to know which. the posi will only work with a 3 series ratio, thanks
Originally posted by mjmaro91 thank you sooooooo much, now i need a gear conversion kit to get the posi in, but it will be worth it
You just need a 3 series carrier and 3 series gear. That is not the only way but may be the cheapest. 3 series carriers and gears out of a 4th gen would be a good starting point. If you don't trust used parts you can always buy new gears from many different companies that will for your rear. Gear swaps and a posi are great for any 3rd gen car, even if it is a 305 TBI
the thing is you can use 3-series gears (ring and pinion) with a 2-series carrier because the carrier is smaller than the ring gear and an adapter/spacer plate will make it work. you cannot use a 3 series carrier with a 2-series ring gear because the ring gear is too small to fit over the carrier. also remember that some housings that came with 2-series gear and carrier might be too small to fit in the 3-series ring or carrier. and make sure to have your new ring pressed onto the carrier housing, don't just try and pull it up with the screws like i heard of someone else doing before...
i have a 91 305 tbi 5 speed and i recently installed a powertrax diff locker, actually called the "No-Slip Traction System". works pretty good, im happy with it. not terribly expensive and it took about 30 mins to install. it definatly got me threw the snow this winter.
