Taking down trans - difficult?

Hey guys,

I need to get a transmission leak taken care of and would like to get it rebuilt. However, the price difference is pretty big if I can just deliver the trans to the shop compared to if I just bring the car there and have them do all the work.

So, is it doable to take the trans (auto) down with the car only sitting on jackstands - and how much work am I looking at?

Thanks!

Ken

i've never actually taken the trans out of a camaro exactly, but i have taken several out of other cars. its definitely doable on jackstands, and it should only take a couple hours probably.

Yep, it is definitely doable. Just make sure the car is up in the air enough so that the transmission can slide out once it's disconnected from the engine . You are going to need a nice assortment of 3/8" extensions for the upper engine-to-tranny bolts, too.

It's been awhile since I've removed/installed a tranny, but it should go something like this for a 3rd gen: raise and support car, disconnent the 2 or 3 electrical connections (lockup, VSS, ?), disconnect shift linkage, disconnect TV cable, remove dipstick and dipstick tube, remove driveshaft, disconnect speedo cable (if equipped), disconnect torque arm, remove inspection cover, unbolt the 3 torque converter-to-flexplate bolts, support tranny with jack and block of wood, remove tranny mount, remove tranny crossmember, unbolt the 6 tranny-to-engine bolts, and then slowly lower the tranny down and out of the car.

I may have forgotten a couple of steps. But, like said earlier, it should only take a couple of hours.

Yeah its do-able in a driveway on jackstands. Need really tall jackstands if you're gonna use a transjack. I've done it a few, not too bad.

Get an extension about 12 inches long with a wobblie at the end for getting those upper bolts.

THe upper bolts are MUCH easier, with a little shortie 9/16" box wrench from above.

For the 700-R4 you dont need to remove the starter. Ive done it about 4 times now with jackstands. Borrow a friend when your ready to lower the trans out.

i tired that when i pulled my 700. i could not get to them. i tryied every thing possible to get to them from the to. i finally got pissed and got all of me extentions and got them from the bottom. i found out that my windshied has a lot of flex in it. when i got mad i threw the wrench as hard as i could and it hit the windsheid and it flexed in but didn't break.
