Headache governor shift point blues (Probuilt)

I'm getting tired of adjusting my shift points by trail and error by pulling the governor and swapping weights and springs over and over (4th time now). Wide open throttle shifts are too low, then it's too high, then it's too low, etc.

Is there not only a rule of thumb but an accurate way to get the weights and springs correct this time?

Does anything other than the governor effect shift points inside the trans? (my tv cable is properly set of course)

Info on setup: Probuilt 700r4, 2500 stall, approx 650hp. I would like shift points to be at 6000rpm.

I even went as far as copying the weights and springs on my friend's art carr transmission. With this setup, my shift points are too high...I cannot get the car to shift at WOT...I have to let off of the gas. Also, when crusing in 3rd and punching it, it will not stay in 3rd unless you are above 3500 rpm. I'd like this to be closer to 3000 rpm.

Last question... Why are there two weights and two springs, and what effect does having a non-identical pair of springs and weights have on the different gear shift points?

Other than this recurring issue, the trans appears to perform great, of course! In the entire time that I have been running this trans, I have never gotten this problem ironed out. Help appreciated!
Thanks!

Scroll down and this link contains the instructions that came with my weight and spring kit. The page also shows the weights that originally came in my probuilt trans...these shifted way too early. Again, I've done this a number of times and I just want to get it right for the last time. http://members.***.net/jmatlock89/garage.htm
Thanks!

one more Q... How does an increase in engine power effect the shift point?

I just did this on my TH400 transmission, and it seems to always be a guessing game.

I used a B&M kit, and only changed one weight and one spring. The instructions for the B&M said you could run one inner weight and one spring, if you needed to.

I weighed the weights that came with the kit and weighed the one I took out, and guessimated from there. Took two tries.

The colors and tension of the springs (orange was in my tranny), did not match the colors of the b&m springs, so you probably can not go by someone else setup, unless you match weights and tension.

Not much help, I know.

Dang, what a mess. Thanks for the input. I am going to start recording weights using a scale and tracking the results. I'll post pics of the current gov config I'm running. If anyone has any helpful methods, advise is much appreciated.

I wonder why two 700r4s can run the same gov weights and springs but still shift at different places...

Guess I got lucky with my th-400 and B&M kit.

I wanted 1-2 shift point at 6000-6200 rpm and 2-3 shift at 5300-5600 rpm

1st weight/springs I put in, got me there.

1-2 at 6100 rpm, 2-3 at 5400 rpm

I used weights # 3 and 6 with yellow and orange springs, from the B&M kit

In the B&M kit heres what the weights/ springs are..

WEIGHTS
Heavy Light
1 2 3 4 5 6

SPRINGS
Stiff Weak
Purple Blue Green Yellow Orange Red

Yep Gm can still get calibrated governers as long as you have a stock ratio rear end gear.
