If I peel out from a stopped position and spin my car around in a circle, will only one tire spin? If so, which one?...and will only one tire accelerate the car in a staight line accelaeration?...will both my tires even turn at the same time? (The only mods to the drivetrain/transmission is a shift kit and lower ratio gears)
well, i just have the regular standard rear from the factory...whatever was used in 1988 for the SC model...does that help or is more information needed?
Most likely you have a one legger. The ony way to know for sure is pull the cover. If you don't know when the fluid was changed last then now you have an excuse.
Also, if you peel out on a one-wheel-peel diff then it will most likely be the right hand one. I reckon this is to do with the torque reaction or is it
If you turn left then it will probably spin up the left rear, closely followed by the right and you may end up shimmying down the road as the axle swaps the loss of traction from wheel to wheel - (the power will always take the easiest route through a non-LSD/posi).

The best way to check in my opinion is to take the differential cover off and look. The fluid probably has not been changed in a long time anyway, so now is the time to change it and find out whats inside. You'll also be able to see what ratio gears are back there. In my opinion the other methods of checking are not the most accurate because you could be dealing with worn or broken parts (aka a posi that has gone out and therefore does not do a proper 2 wheel burnout or pass the "spin test")
If you have an open rear only 1 wheel will attempt to deliver power to the ground regardless of whats going on. This would be the infamous one wheel peel. If you have a posi aka LSD then 2 wheels will attempt to deliver power to the ground, though not always at the same time. It will attempt to deliver the power to the wheel with the most traction. So depending on whats going on you may or may not have both wheels spinning. Video of my car has shown a straight line burnout to spin both, and a donut to have the power switch back and forth from one side to the other depending on traction (so both not always spinning the same at all times). If you want both to spin together at all times you need a locked rearend, and this is usually considered as not street friendly.
So mine would have either a limited slip diff or a bad posi in mine. I can do burnouts and get either just the right or both to light up. Sometimes it won't even burn out, it'll just grunt down and push my locked front wheel forward and start to bounce the rear end and shimmy to the left in the rear. But it also needs suspension work bad. But I'm trying to finish getting it running right and stopping first.
Off topic, but i was doing wannabe posi burnouts in my one legger, because my e-brake cable was only attatched to the right. Pull it a little, and mash the gas! And the cable was broken, i didn;t do it on purpose
you can get two wheel burnouts out of a one legged wonder, well at least 10-20 feet worth
if you back up in a turn and then stop and straighten the wheels out and then light them itll bind the spider gears sometimes and do a two wheel burn, makes a big difference on the takeoff power/speed
