New 700r4, no seocnd,third,or fourth

i bought a rebuilt trans from maddog transimmision, and a new precision 2k stall, i got it all put together and finally got to test drive it last night. it goes into first and holds perfect but it doesn't seem to grab in 2,3,4, reverse works fine. while installing everything i flushed the cooler, filled the converter with about 2.5 quarts and put five qts in the trans, started it up and added fluid untill it read full, i used about 11 qts total of royal purple max atf. i bought and installed a new t.v. cable, it's adjusted so ther is no slack at w.o.t. any ideas, anyone?

I would call Maddog back and ask how many qt.s the trans and convertor will take. A stock 700R4 and convertor will take about 13 to 14 qt.s providing both were dry upon install. It sounds like you don't have enough fluid. The trans cannot build the pressure needed to make everything work without the proper fluid level. It sounds like you only need to add one or two qt.s Warm it up to normal operating temp and check the level on flat ground. As you fill it get in the car and work the selector level through all the ranges without moving the car. As the fluid level gets near the full mark the engine should sound different. All this worked for me after I rebuilt my 700 and it wouldn't move very well until I had the fluid level were it's supposed to be. I run it right at the full mark on the dipstick.

Thanks for the replys! With the motor fully warmed up the fluid is about 1/4 of an inch above the top of the full when hot line on the dipstick, but i'll go mess with it later today and see if i can get some more fluid in there, I've sent Maddog an email couple hours ago. I'm waiting for his resonse on this. Thanks for the help, if anyone has any other ideas please let me know. Thanks, Scott

ok i added 2 more qts of atf, now the dipt stick reads 1 1/2 above full, is it possible that theres air trapped in there and thats why it;s not sucking in the rest of the fluid, any ideas? Thanks, Scott

I would call maddog and ask wtf? There is a blockage somewhere in theresomewhere. I would drain the fluid into a clean pan and check the filter. But with 13 qts it should be at the full line and happy. When you had it running could you see fluid leaking possibly out of the overflow tube in the top, I know u can't see the tube but check for leaking fluid. Just some things to do while u wait for maddog. Did maddog give u a warrenty?

mad dog gave me a i year warranty, i talked to him 2 hours ago, he is really backing his work on this one he told me it's most likely a blockage in he valve body or a stuck governor. he told me to put the rear on jack stands and run the tranny through the gears. but little change, i noticed that it shifts from 1'st to third, a late shift, and seems to be slipping in third, it will not go into second or fourth at all, he told me to take it to a small local shop and have them contact him so he can give them detail about this trans. withought asking he offered my money back first but i told him i still want to do business with him and he said "cool" he told me that he would pay for the work done at the shop to fix this. at least he's backing his work, so tomorrow i'm gonna have to have a tow truck take me to a shop about 15 miles away, theres one shop closer, 9 miles away, but the shop 15 miles away did all the work on my moms 98 camaro and seemed to be resonably priced honest guys, so hopefully i'll have her runnin again in a couple of days, i'll repost when i found out what the problem is, thanks for all the help, and feel free to post new ideas that you may have about my problem, thanks, scott

I'd bet on the governor,(could have the nylon teeth messed up on it too)
but could still be a stuck valve in the valve body....
sounds like they're gonna help ya out.

Update......I just talked to the shop. It turned out to be a stuck valve in the valve body. they told me it more than likely was from debris that stayed in the cooler after the flush. about $200 charges from the shop. hopefully i'll get it back tomorrrow night.
