PowerTrax No-Slip

I'm looking to buy a PowerTrax No-Slip unit from summit. The problemb is that there's two different ones (PWT-92-0776-2805 & PWT-92-0776-2885), and the only difference seems to be $5o. Anyone know what the difference between the two is?

Also, before I buy, has anyone heard anything bad about these? I've heard nothing but good things myself.

Per their website, the 2885 is the "Gov Lock" version. http://www.powertrax.com/chevycarns.pdf

I've been using a Lockright unit in the 8.2" since 2002. The only issue I've had is finding a small broken-off corner chip when changing the fluid. Didn't harm the operation, but wouldn't have been a pretty picture if it had gotten picked up by the gears.

what do you plan on doing with the car? I have one in mine and I absolutely hate it.If you're doing a strip only car go for it but if it's a daily driver get a posi.everytime I go around a corner when I hit the brakes the whole rear end makes this horribly loud BAM noise.I thought it would get better the longer it was in but I've had this thing in for about a year.I'll be getting a posi soon.

I have heard nothing but good things about the Detroit TrueTrac. I just bought one because they came highly recommended. The price is right with the other companies. I got mine through summit for 365.

as far as straight line performance it works very well.my acceleration is awesome.but in the turns the rearend really binds up.the locker really hurts all around performance.

Will the Detroit TruTrack stay open if I lay into it while turning? In the info. about it, it says that it won't have a "negative effect" on handling. I need something that I know is gonna spin both tires wether I'm turning or not, but behave when it needs to, since this is my daily driver. I'm tired of drifting with an open diff, tho.
I'm emailing powertrax about the bang noise...

A gear driven posi, like the True Track or the Torsen, does not actually spin both wheels at the same time. It pots power to the wheel that is NOT slipping. once that wheel starts to spin, or "slip", power is transfered to the other wheel. So, you get a back and forth power transfer in the rear axle. However, this happens so quickly that you can't tell it's happening. They work so well for road racing and auto-xing because the tire with the most grip is the one that gets the power. In normal driving you can't even tell it's a limited slip till you romp on it hard enough to break both tires loose

I have the powertrax lock rite in my 88. I installed it in Oct. 2004.

I can't say enough good things about this locker to tell you the truth.

I guess robertfrank has diff results than I do with the locker cause I get NO loud bangs at all.

Here's the good, bad and ugly of my results..

very low speed, tight turns like parking, or turning out of a road..... Clicking sound from locker.. Not loud enough to hear once RPM gets over 1500 rpm.. The rear will feel like it jerks sometimes on those tight turns aswell

Corners, turns at speed.... Really the locker helped me to drive her harder into the turn than before. If I let up real fast on the throttle, or push down hard on the throttle while in the turn the rear of car will "wiggle". You can throttle up and down in turns just so long as you slam on the throttle or yank your foot off.

Norm. driving... I don't even know it's there. Cant hear or feel it while crusing.

Straight line... WOW!!! is the best word for it. The added traction is great. 1/4 of the wheel spin as I had with the open rear.

OMG dude. If you're going to do ANY autocrossing or related stuff like that, stay as far away from a powertrax unit as possible. I have one in my 69 camaro, and it's horrible and sometimes downright scary around turns. If the locker catches a tooth and suddendly engages really fast while turning, I get that same "bang" sound the other guy mentioned. It actually sounds like you snapped an axle or something, and the whole rear of the car will lurch sideways. I got two sets of springs with it, and I installed the "strip" springs first, then I switched it to the lighter "street/strip" springs, but it only made a slight difference. I'll agree that you can't beat em for straight line traction, but the street manners are completely terrible with them. I didn't want to change my whole differential carrier either, which is why I decided to use the powertrax unit, but it's definitely not worth it. Besides, it's embarrassing when you're cruising on a Sat. night, and you go to turn around in the parking lot to head back up the strip, and your car is clicking and banging, and everyone is looking at you like your car is a noisy piece of sh1t. In closing, go with a clutch style posi or the zexel -torsen/ truetrac style posi unit. Either way, you'll be infinitely better off, trust me!
