ok in my stock 1989 firebird with drum non posi rear i believe from reading i have 2.73 gears stock? is there a way to swap to a higher gear such as 3.42's and if so can someone explain how to?
its probably be more work than you want or are capable of. You will have to get some new parts and basically you have to remove the cover, remove the axles, unbolt the caps to the carrier, pull it out, swap ring gears, and remove and swap the pinion gear also. There are some special tools needed like an in/lb torque wrench and such.

But if you have that 2 series posi, and are going to buy a new set of gears just get the ratio you want that fits the 2 series carrier. Richmond makes gear sets with ratios of 2.73 all the way up to 4.10 that fit on a 2 series carrier.
This gear set from Jegs is for 3.08 ratio and numerically lower carrier (2 series), and does not require the spacer. Has a 3.73 Ratio, 41-11 Teeth
