I've searched this forum inside out and i only find answers about mechanical speedo's with automatics. Well, I just swapped my auto for a t5 (1990 has a digital speed sensor). My 86 auto had a mechanical. I don't want to pay crazy amounts of money just for a converter. Is it possible to just replace the VSS with a cable driven one? That's all I want PLEASE! i have a 305, stock tires, with 3.23 gears. I believe its the red gear (18tooth). I've searched autozone, advanced auto parts, junkyards.... transmission places... for this cable driven speed sensor and I come off as crazy. I know there has to be a cable driven one. There has to! Yup.

One screw; pop the one out, slip the other in. Totally interchangeable.

The piece you need is called a "sleeve". You can get it at the GM store. It's still available.

At a dealer ship? I looked it up on gmpartsdirect.com and under manual trans for an 86 there is no part called a sleeve. Would oyu have a part #? Other names it goes by?? Right now without the speedo gear working right, I get a SES light. I think my car's running rich too the exhaust pipe is smellin hella strong.

I Just called my local chevy dealership and spoke with parts dept. First they say they don't manufacture them anymore, but I told them they do. I told them i know the gear size, that i've tried junkyards trans shops auto parts stores. Now they asked me to call them later they are all caught up. SOMEONE PLEASE help me find the right mechanical speedo for a t-5. It's not like I'm doing it for a 700r4 auto, those are worse i believe.

Also, should i just get the cable driven one, or a combo of the cable driven wit the the digital out (what do I do with the 4 prongs connector (reverse lights and i dont know what else) that used to go into my 700r4. I just did the swap from auto to stick.

The one for an 86 is discontinued. I'm giving you part #'s for an 84, I'm not positive that they interchange, but I would think they would.

The part numbers above are the ones that I used on my 3.23's (to include the 7-tooth purple, though mine's is more bluish). FYI, the date printed on the instruction sheet is 1-13-72!

I hope these part # are for a 5 speed correct? Also, I just ordered a sleeve, don't I need a housing? Are there any parts I might be missing? Thanks so much for the help so far. I just ordered those parts. I hope I'm not missing anything

Yeah one more question, sorry but what do I do with the 4 prong connect that used to go into my old auto tranny? I know 2 are for reverse but what are the other two?

The sleeve is the housing, and that should be all the parts you need.

One of the wires should be for the TCC solenoid and maybe the 4th gear switch? Tape them out of the way, you don't need them anymore.

The sleeve you need is more commonly referred to as the speedo "bullet", because that's what it looks like. The really nice part is the fact that it's the exact same part that's been used for years on muncies, saginaws, borg-warners, TH350, Powerglide, TH400, etc. Just about every GM with a mechanical speedo drive uses the same piece. The hard part to find is the correct speedo driven gear, as the T5 ones have been discontinued for quite some time now, the "bullet" is the easy piece to come by. One of the board members here has a few of the driven gears, his user name is JMD. The other places you could try for speedo gears would be Hanlon Motorsports, The Gear Box, Medatronics Corp. (5 speeds.com), and Standard Transmissions.com. These companies seem to have some of the gears still available. The bolt and retainer for your electric VSS sender is the same as the cable style, so the only two pieces you need are the bullet and the correct plastic driven gear.

You wouldn't believe. Back in Summer 2006, I got everything to work with the mechanical speedo thanks to the 4 of you guys. Now, I got an SES light again from the speedo (Nov 2007), I've troubleshooted my problem. I'm 90% sure that my drive gear has broken. I've been searching for the number of teeth and part number for the past week! So grateful this post helped me not just once, but twice! Thanks guys! I'll be rippin it in Jersey!
