Tranny stuck in drive
on my way home tonight i hit a raccoon that ran across the road, going about 55
neway now my automatic transmission wont shift right, my engine runs up to 4k rpms at 50 mph, and i dunno wtf is goin on
i need help asap, cuz i cant be without a ride to work and back...
plus its stuck in drive, the shift lever is hard as heck to move, and even if its moved, the tranny stays in drive...
thanks in advance

sounds like the coon hit the linkage at the tranny, i would get under the car and inspect, probably bent the bracket or something
and its probably not in final gear anymore it sounds like, did you count how many shifts you get, do you still get all your gears as you get up to cruising speed ?
youll have to inspect your linkage and see what happened,
time for a floor jack
good luck

Well i checked the linkage at the tranny and there doesnt seem to be any damage at all...
however it looks like maybe it pulled on the shift cable and messed it up inside the car at the shifter assy
is that possible?
and can i just buy a new cable and install it?
thanks

an update on the subject, i found that the tranny was in second gear, not drive,
and i can switch the gears by getting under the car and pushing the lever on the side of the tranny
ive got a new cable ordered from autozone, ill have it by friday and it should be fixed by saturday...

oooookay
so i put in the new cable
but now i cant get it to go into park
im betting its because the cable needs to be adjusted a little,
but as im not really transmission-savvy,
i was wondering how exactly the "park" gear works?
if ne one knows, that would help, plus im curious a little
thanks in advance

Might be possible the shifter arm may have spun on the shaft a bit. Put the trans and gear lever in neutral to see if things line up. If not, take the nut off the trans lever and see if it's keyed on the shaft properly. Also, if the cable is adjustable, errm adjust it hehe. Been a while since I've messed with a stock cable but I remember them just clipping in on the two ends, right?

What i like to do is to put the car in park and loosen the adjuster nut and make sure that the trans is in the park position then tighten the bolt on the trans then put the car in reverse and see if the trans goes into reverse and see if the reverse lights come on if they do your in the ball park....
