Have you ever tried to shift your car from 1 to 2 to 3 to D before? If you have, I'm sure you've noticed it's really easy to fly from 1 to D if you're not careful. With a rachet shifter, this wont happen. It's kind of a must if you plan on doing some serious drag racing or anything where you want to be selective in your gear.
