Excessively stiff clutch pedal?

The clutch pedal on my '85 Z28 is extremely stiff (ie, hard to push in). Yesterday the bushing that holds the master cylinder push rod to the clutch pedal broke causing the rod to fall off the pedal thus making it impossible to shift. I bought a new bushing and it broke after pushing the clutch in about 5 times. Bought another and the same thing happened. It seems that there is so much resistance against the pedal that the push rod twists sideways upon being pressed in. What would cause this? Conversely, the clutch pedal on my '89 RS is extremely soft requiring almost no effort to push in, but it shifts perfectly.

I don't have any insight to your problem. I have a similar problem in that the clutch push rod has come off of the pedal. Where did you get the bushing? Does the bushing go on the pedal or on the push rod? I don't suppose you have any pictures, do you?

It is on my son's car and he is 1300 miles away at college. I'm trying to help him out.

Just revisiting this thread to see if anybody responded.

Gymbeau: No I don't have any pictures. The bushing goes on the pedal and the push rod slips over it. The bushing is supposed to hold the push rod in place but mine isn't. I'm totally at a loss as to what to do. I guess I'm gonna have to pull the master cylinder and see if it is stuck or binding and check the clutch fork to see if it is binding or hung up on something.

We bought the retaining clip that goes on the brake pedal. It is metal and it is a separate piece from the bushing. If your pedal is that stiff, I would definitely check for binding and such. Does the clutch even disengage?
