Anybody have 4.11's in their street car?
I am getting a Moser rear end for my Camaro...and am a little up in the air about the gear ratio to get. It is going to be mainly a street car...but I plan to take it to the track a few times a year. It isn't going to be a daily commuter. I really want a strong launch...but am a little worried about driving it on the highway. I have an 82 Z28 with a TH400. With 4.11's, anyone know what the rpm's while at 65 mph on the highway would be around? Maybe 3.73's would be better? What do you guys think?
p.s. I have done searches, but can't come up with any usable info!

i have a great link that you can use, but im not at home and will post it later. all you have to do is fill in rear gear ratio, all tranny gear ratios, tire size, and rpm increments you want and it will show you rpm and speed in every gear. you can change the rear gear number to give you an idea of the rpm's it will get with different ratios.
i will post it as soon as i get home this afternoon

You'd be turning around 3500 rpm at 65 with 4.11 and factory tires (245/50/16). Oh, and with that setup you'd top out around 100mph with a 5500rpm redline. I'd say go with 3.45 or 3.73 with a non overdrive tranny, maybe even lower. It all depends on how much highway time you are going to see and what kind of rpm you are comfortable with.
Check out the link below for this gear calculator. I like this one.

i run a 4.11 in my camaro, not really sure of the rpms on the highway since I don't drive it to the track it's trailered. I break too often to drive it 2 hours each way to the track. Go on google or yahoo and type in rpm calculator and use one of those websites to pick a gear.

Thanks man! Looks like 4.11's are going to be a little extreme for a predominantly street used car! Maybe 3.73's would be a little more user-friendly!

I posted an excel spreadsheet to help with this before.

4.11's will be FAR too much gear. You'll be just howling on the highway just to keep up with traffic. With that motor, I think 3.23's are lots.

Just watched your video. That's a beautiful motor dude! Too bad I have to keep mine sane enough to be a daily driver. A friend of mine has a blown, nitrous-injected 540 in his 67 Camaro, and he said he ended up going with a numerically lower ratio to get the best times. He started out with 3.73's IIRC, and he ended up running 3.31's or 3.42's to get the best times in the 1/4. He had so much motor, he couldn't get it to hook no matter how he set up the chassis when he had the 3.73's. My brother runs 3.73's behind a TH350 in his 69 Camaro, and they work fantastic for him, but his engine is naturally aspirated. You really need to figure out what rpm range your engine makes it's peak HP at, then pick the gears according to that. Good luck, and sweet car man!

4.11's are a great gear on the street with a 5+ speed manuals
without an overdrive you're screwed though
i have 4.11's in my car, and i can do 80 at under 3,000rpm.......but with a th400 it would be tough

I had 4.10's in my 88 Formula and they were really fun on the street and around town, but sucked on the highway, 3K cruising and about 120-125 top speed.
I went with 3.42's after I broke the 4.10's and it was weird getting used to the new gears. 4.10's I would just let off the clutch and start moving and with the 3.42's I had to use the clutch and gas.

this is why i love manuals.. you have that extra gear(s) for the highway.. i run 3.89's and with my 6700 rev limiter, i can top 130mph in 4th.. 5th is too high to think about.. 55mph at 1700..

If your blower is set up to work, you should have no trouble torqueing your way through 3.73 gears and getting a little better drive on the freeway than you'd get with the 4.11s.
Friendly suggestion? You gotta get some tires. Those T/A radials are killing your image. They absolutely scream POSER!
