New car questions

Just picked up my first Trans Am a few weeks ago. Always wanted one as a teenager. These cars just still look hot to me. Anyway it was a one owner car and was sitting in a garage when I bought her. It has a few minor issues that I am working out. My transmission questions are these.
1) Does my car have a lockup converter and what controls it? It feels like it does because my RPM shifts 5 times like 1,2,3,OD,Lockup.
2) There was a switch on the brake pedal that had a vacuum line for the cruise and a 2 wire electrical connector I assume to kill the cruise. I found that the ***wipes that installed the car alarm in the past had broken the switch and left it hanging there. I plugged the vacuum line and jumped the switch and my cruise works now and still disengages with a push of the brake pedal. Could that electrical connector that is jumped out control the converter lockup?
3) The shifter indicator is not working. I can't tell what gear I am in except by feel. How hard is it to get the console off and fix the indicator?
4) In all my other vehicles, I have changed the transmission fluid and flushed it all out via the cooler line until clean fluid comes out and replaced with AAMCO synthetic blend fluid. Will this hurt a 700R?
The car info is it's a 87 TransAm 5.0 4BBL with A/C. All original except Edelbrock long tube headers and Flowmaster exhaust. Even still has R12 in the A/C!

Re: New car questions

1. Yes your car has a TCC. lockup is controlled by the computer.
2. you can use the diagnostic port to manually lockup the TC if you so wish. I believe its terminals A&K IIRC.
3. You only have to remove the shifter plate, not the entire console. I believe there's 8 T-10 bolts. I've never torn apart a plate, so i can't give advice there. Shifter plates are dime a dozen on ebay if you can't get it fixed...
4. that'll work just fine, but don't snap a line!

Hope some of my advice comes in handy.
