86 IROC rearend making a scraping noise

Hey guys just bought a 86 Z28 with a 450+hp 383 stroker, 2800 stall turbo 350 with a reverse manual valvebody, complete subframe connectors, and a 4.56,7.5 10" rear with an Auburn locker. I was going to put a set of 3.73 in it and took the cover off to verify the locker and pull the third member out. The carrier pin would not slide out past the ring gear so I assumed there are clips on the ends of the axles. A big cruise event was happening here local so I put the caps back on the carrier in the order they came off torked down to 55lbs. put the cover on and filled with 80-90w with additive. Rotated assembly several times then took it for a drive.NOW when I go left or right around a corner coasting there is a Loud metalic scraping noise from either side( sounds like something scraping on the backing plates) and under a load it won't do it. I took the rear cover off and could'nt see anything wrong.....ANY IDEAS???

Re: 86 IROC rearend making a scraping noise

The carrier pin coming out has nothing to do with the C clip axles. You HAVE to get the carrier pin out to be able to take the c clip axles out in the first place. On a thick gear like a 4.56, the gear is probably going to interfere with getting the carrier pin out at all. I am not sure of the correct way to get it out when the gear is too thick to slide the pin out.

Who knows what happened when you semi took apart your rear. Did you leave all of the carrier shims in place?

Yes, all the shims are still in the same place as I didn't remove anything. The only thing I can think of is that one or more of the shims got bound up with the caps not keeping the gap right. Also it has a mini starter that is starting to grind the ring gear. When I look at it from the rear it looks like the bendix gear is too close to the ring causing it to not engage.Do these third gens all have the same size ring gears. I'm going out now to see if i can see what the ring and starter are.
