Re: rear end sounds

more than likely you're gonna have to put the rear in the air on jacks and locate the area the whine is coming from. be it the pumpkin or an axle bearing, etc.

...i think i have a bad axle bearing myself, i feel your pain...

Re: rear end sounds

^^^ AGREE ^^^ .... what kind of rear end did you replace it with, i know the gears in some heavy duty rears while , no way out of it, but this is normaly subject on big trucks (internationals are bad for it) .....wouldn't think it would apply to a rear on a camaro

Re: rear end sounds

my axle bearing exploded 50 miles after a complete rear-end rebuild. name brand parts on everything. replaced with a new gm bearing, and i believe the thing is still whining...hope you have better luck than me.

Re: rear end sounds

Gear noise can be determined by the whine occurance. Is it on light acceleration, de-celeration, load, no-load, etc?

Re: rear end sounds

The only way to know is to check your backlash and also check your mating surfaces. Marking complound and check your coast and drive engagements. If you used your old crush sleeve you might have a problem there. Being its crushed too far and the pinion and ring arent mating right.

Re: rear end sounds

Dealer usually always has them for $10 or so. Ive read both inputs on re-using the sleeve. IMO its a one-time-use part. For cheap insurance go with what you feel comfortable with. Also...just a side querty...what weight oil did you use and did you add limited slip additive?

Re: rear end sounds

i rebuilt my rear by my self on the ground 7.5 10 bolt 28 spline axles this rear is very weak its not rated for much150hpto190hp it sucks and if u like snacthing gears the crush sleeve will crush this is so u dont bust ur housing.
first take wheels off drums/rotors take pot cover off take pin bolt out its on
the carreir spin the axle and the spiders will fall outtake c clips out remove axles undo carrier bolts remove carrier take drive shaft down take pinnion nut off get a dead beat hammer hit pinnion until comes off yokepull pinnion out.

a whine on decel is gear noise, usually from improper setup or wear, was the rear new or used (up?)
