tranny swap question

hey got a problem as far as finding the right replacement parts for my 86 z28. someone before me did a half as tranny sapw from the 700r4 to a bw t5. problem is they used a tranny from a 2.8l instead of a 305. input splines on the installed tranny is 14... looking on summit and jegs etc. v8 tranny in puts are suspossed to be 10 or 26. i found a newer tranny from a 84 z28 that has 26 spline. also with that 14 input shaft it offers smaller clutch discs.

my concern is that with the 350 motor in front of the t5 (the issue i had to make me pull the tranny out to begin with) is the clutch slipping. after pulling it i assumed it was because of the v6 tranny with smaller clutch.

my questions are as follows:

1. how big of clutch disc/ pressure plate can i go with to prevent the slipping
2. what companies you guys recommend
3 flywheel... havent checked it out yet as far as size, would it be different as far as the different trannys v6 vs v8? i know i have to at least resurface the flywheel but will i have to replace to go to a bigger clutch.

TIA

Re: tranny swap question

You probably have the right flywheel and bellhousing already, since I don't think either of them from a V6 will work on a V8. The biggest clutch you can use is the 10.5". The 11" clutch won't fit with a T5 bellhousing/flywheel. I can almost guarantee your clutch is slipping because of the puny V6 disc/pressure plate. In addition to that, the gear ratios in V6 T5's suck when you put it behind a V8 motor. I'd recommend going with a Ram clutch. Their OEM equivalent clutch works great, and if you don't mind spending the extra money, the Ram Powergrip clutch is awesome. You need the 10.5", 26 spline clutch for the 84-92, 5.0 liter 305. Make sure you get the flywheel resurfaced too while you have it apart. Ram won't honor their warranty without having a resurfaced flywheel, besides the fact that it'll need it anyways after slipping so much.

Re: tranny swap question

Yeah, 305 or 350, they still use the same clutch. As far as Zoom clutches are concerned, I've never heard anything negative about them. They seem like a good clutch for the price. I mentioned the Ram clutches since I have personal experience with them, but I wouldn't hesitate to try a Zoom clutch in a street-driven car. I've seriously considered trying their multi-friction (MF-1675A) model with my T5 setup.
