Raptor tranny crapped out

so this past summer I had my tranny rebuilt with 700Raptor.com rebuild kit with what they suggested. Tranny seemed to hold up fine to the two days i went to the track and occassional flooring it around town. Well started to get cold outside and I dont find driving this heavy beast in snow that I get in Northern VA so I was putting it in storage in my parents garage about 60 miles from me. Well I started the car to get going to my parents house and it feels really sluggish...like an ignition problem. Don't pay much attention to it bc I just replaced the ignition module and plugs/wires and coil is still pretty new (less than 6 months old). Halfway there on the interstate at around 75mph , I hear a clunking noise coming from the tranny. I'm thinking oh crap. Towed the car to the house and tried driving it into the garage.....reverse is gone and 1st gear is weak....car cuts off if i put it into gear. So I get pissed and kick the car, go inside and drown my sorrows in a case of bud lite.
Now I am looking at pro built rebuild kit and Edge converter. I was gonna put in an edge converter late in the winter anyways so im not but so pissed that I have to yank the tranny or rebuild it really....just that it broke on me at the most inconvenient time.
I dont know what to think of 700Raptor.com now....

Sounds like they only supplied the kit and didn't lay a hand on rebuilding your trans the way I read it.

Who rebuilt your tranny?

I think i would point the blame at the rebuilder first, and not the parts supplier?

What kind of TV cable setup you running?

Re: Raptor tranny crapped out

I do realize that, however what makes it weird is i called 700raptor about it and they are claiming that they didnt recommend the kit that they sold to me. They claimed I needed the best rebuild kit. I cant prove anything so my word vs theirs.

I do hear this story often, But always bear in mind the trans longtivity is 50 percent the parts you use and 50 percent the builder. I have seen cars in the 11s with near a stock build and going strong. Good luck in your endevor

I had a TH400 rebuilt 3 times by the same shop. 2 of the times it only lasted a few days since 1st and reverse were coming on at the same time burning it up. 3rd time I'm not sure what happened but all of a sudden reverse and 3rd went out. Not to mention the governor sticking twice. It's sitting in the garage since I bought another TH400 which has given me zero problems in over 4 years of use.

10.97 as a best and many dozens of low 11 second nos passes. Hundreds of bottom 12 n/a passes, and 8 years of almost daily driving. All with a near stock, blueprinted unit.
Good builder is more important than the parts installed, im my opinion.

Re: Raptor tranny crapped out

Alright I will say this....I'm not giving Raptor a bad name but since dont know which was at fault I wont go back to either. I am looking at probuilt transmission or performabuilt transmissions. I want a warranty since alot of transmission shops around me dont back up warranties unless it is their products.

Re: Raptor tranny crapped out

Erratic shift points, took it to the same trans shop and he found some junk in there. Cleaned it up and stuck it back in only to last about another couple weeks. The transmission is cursed I think I'm going to take it apart one of these days and have a look at everything myself.

I agree 1000000% about builder vs parts. You really shouldn't make a post titled "raptor tranny crapped out" when it wasn't a raptor trans. 95% of 700r4 failures are builder related.

Bottom line, if you want a truely strong 700r4, buy a complete one from a reputable builder like Dana at probuilt or a raptor from PATC. Performabuilt seems to be developing a name for himself as well. - You can't blame the parts house for a failure of something they didn't build.

This is actually one big reason we havent started selling kits , Many people ask but theres that whole name issue, If you sell complete kits and then the trans fails even though you didnt build it. You many times get the blame. I have seen it in many threads on many forums with various vendors. You have to bear in mind the seller of the kits dosent make the kits or the parts in them, They simply reselland for the most part they are the same parts that transmission supplier like us use.But like I said the parts are only half the story if that when it comes to building any trans, I see so many people try and build there own , Most fail , I also see alotta guys buy kits and take them to a local builder which is all fine if he knows what hes doing or if included follow the instructions that come with the kit, But even then your only settin your self up for the builder if the unit fails to blame the kit or parts you supplied, It makes things very complicated, I think if and or when we evr do offer parts it wont be in a kit form but rather individual brand name peices and let who ever builds it decide what they want to do ,

Re: Raptor tranny crapped out

i just fell victim to a raptor stage 2 crapping out on the highway. i was cruising at about 65 and tried to pass someone and when i hit the gas i had no response and a weird click or 2. apparently that was 3rd gear saying goodbye. the trans only had a few thousand on it. so i will not be going with another from them. i am gonna go with performabuilt. i hear great things and they are only a couple hours away from me.

I am currently dealing with Performabuilt right now. Frank is a great guy (name is Performabuilt here on thirdgen.org). All I am doing is waiting for the transmission to come in.
