I'm working on my 85 transam that now has a 355 carb , I got the car with that swap already in it but trying to finish it with better setup . How can I identify if the transmission still has somekind of the wiring from the original lock-up ( pictures would help! ) so I can figure out how to activate it again.
Thanks lot
There should be a connector on the drivers sideon the back half of the tranny close to the top of it. You will probably need an aftermarket tcc switch to make th tranny work again.
So I would not need to open the trans pan right? What cable is connected at that place and where should it go if it's still on my car so I can check if it's still there???
Yes I know this tranny used to have one but as it has now a carbed 355 with no more ECM then I'm wondering what happened to that lock-up as I bought the car with this engine swap already in...
Sorry Dave didn't call you as I wanted to have a look under the car to be sure what was here or not , so just checked this today and YES the lock-up wiring is still on the transmission and runs back in the ECM harness that I was pulling off ( 3 wires , pink-brown-blue) but the ECM is long gone so where and how should I plug those 3 wires to have my lock-up back??
ya , I've already seen those switches around but my transmision still have the wiring in it so I wanna use it by activating it again from where the 3 wires are part of the ECM harness .
If that's all you wanna do, put a toggle switch on it. Search and you'll find pretty quickly which one you need to connect. That said, lame. Do it right; the parts are cheap.
The basic theory is this: the tcc lockup solenoid near the valve body controls lockup of the torque converter clutch. (smart eh?) You supply it with power, it engages. You really only want this to happen in 4th gear for most uses these cars see. If you want it to happen in third, this setup will work with some basic wiring mods. So you need to make sure that your fourth gear pressure switch (yes, you have one) is normally open. That is, that it completes the circuit when fourth gear is engaged. (p/n 8642473 $6.78) Now you want switched power to the pressure switch. Run a wire off of something that's only on when the key is on to the pressure switch, and continue on to the tcc solenoid. The tranny will now lock up in fourth gear, and unlock when you downshift.
Not good enough? take the 12v wire going into the tranny now, and route it through the brake switch (it's under the brake pedal). Now it unlocks when you hit the brakes.
Still not good enough? Use a normally closed vacuum switch on the 12v wire as well. Now it unlocks during hard acceleration. (I get to be lazy, search the forums and you'll find a part number)
Thanks for your help guys ! OK you sure are much more qualified then I am.. Let's put things in a simply way... I ddon't get much of waht is being said.. Never did any work on a tranny before.. So far I have that 4 PIN connector on the tranny running back in the ECM harness that I'm pulling of as the engine is no more the LG4 but a carbed 355 , from now 3 wires come out of that 4 PIN , one is pink , one is brown, and a blue one . My question is : do I have to simply somehow connect somekind of simple switch to make it work? Is there a link showing how to do it ? Or is it more complicatd then that and I need more stuffs???? Any pictures step by step around?
OK I found this thread http://www.clubhotrod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26644, But when I hooked the purple wire to 12V key brake switch and wired together the blue and black/tan the tranny then locks in every gear... and does not seem to unlock when coming to a stop with the brakes...So tried to ground the black/tan wire instead of putting it with the blue but exactly same thing and locks in all gears...ANY IDEAS????
THANKS LOT!!
I've wired the purple wire ton 12V brake switch ( by the way I have 2 brake switches ??...) and wired the tan/black and blue wire together and tranny locks up from 1 to 4 th gear... Tried then to keep purple to 12V and ground the tan/black and blue to nothing and still tranny locks in all gears ... Then tried the purple still to 12V and blue to ground , ta/black to nothing and it seems that tranny does not lock in low gears at least , have not tried in high speed.. Any idea????
Thanks lot!
