Governor Gear Questions

My car wasn't shifting out of first gear, so I bought a new governor gear. I took my governor out and this is what I found. There was NO gear on the end of the governor. So, I'm sure it's broken off inside the tailshaft. Would it be okay for me to install the NEW gear on this governor without removing the broken gear out of the transmission? What could happen? Also, since there was no gear on the end of this governor when I removed it, I have no clue how to put this new gear on, does anyone have pics on how it goes on the governor. I'm confused. Thanks all.

Re: Governor Gear Questions

I couldn't get my governor gear to go on my old governor, so I ordered a used one with a new gear, so we'll see if it works with the old gear broken off inside the tranny.

The old gear in the transmission will not do any harm.

Re: Governor Gear Questions

It's just plastic; it'll either find some little nook or cranny inside there to hide out in, or get ground up to dust, or both.

Probably broke in half and fell off the end.

Re: Governor Gear Questions

Not to jack the thread or anything, but I think the same thing just happened on my 90 truck with a 700r4. Won't shift out of first.

Anyway, could someone tell me how to get to the governor?

Re: Governor Gear Questions

The governor is located on the back of the transmission on the drivers side. Use a screw-driver and hammer to pry off the cover and the governor should wiggle right out. Be careful not to damage the governor cover. Do a search on this board and you will find a thread with some pictures if you are having trouble locating it.

As I have found out, the governor gear is a common problem on 700R4 transmissions.
