Ford 9 noob question

Been searching for a better rear for over a year now, and waiting for myself to justify spending the money. Nothings broke yet..............

I've looked at doing a 8.5 swap, 8.8, dana 44, yadda yadda. After adding up all the parts needed, it seems that getting a Ford 9 housing from moser is probably the cheapest way. Less headaches too.

So, I know nothing about these rears. Im making about 700hp now and may make 800 when I switch to E85. Questions I have are:

Can I just get any old center section? I see them cheap on ebay. Such as this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/9-For...spagenameZWDVW

Just throw gears and a posi in and I'm good to go? A 1350 yoke. I'll get custom axles to fit my wheels. Brakes to fit 15" wheels....

I would not use a stock one at those power levels, a sportsman case from strange is about 200 and good to those levels without worry. you running a T brake?

Re: Ford 9 noob question

As mentioned in the listing question, you need to be aware of the axle spline count. Ford 28 spline axles are a lot stronger than Chev 28 spline axles but I'd recommend going to 31 spline. You can easily upgrade to 33 spline but there are no factory 33 spline carriers, only 28 and 31.

My car uses Moser 31 spline axles into a Strange spool.

I wouldn't recommend that particular center section in the Ebay listing. The numbers he's given are only for the pinion support and not the case. I'd guess to say the case is an old and weak WAR casting.

I still use a factory C7AW-E case and factory pinion support. I'd love to upgrade to an aluminum case some day. I already have a Daytona aluminum pinion support. Strange makes an inexpensive aluminum case but I want the stronger Moser case.

Go look in the junkyard for a center section from an old Bronco. It will usually have 4.10 gears, posi and 31 spline axles. Buy the Moser housing package with 31 spline axles and bolt the center section in.

Re: Ford 9 noob question

Thanks for the info Stephen. I was hoping you would chime in. I remember you telling me to go this route back when I was talking about doing a 8.5.

No transbrake. The 31's were what I had in mind. Your car is damn quick and I'm sure it launches hard. Whats workin for you im sure will work for me. I'd like to have around a 3.70 gearset. The car gets driven more on the street than track. I called around some junkyards a while ago about some 9" third members, when they had some, they wanted an arm and a leg for em. Junkyards get stripped around here. Might be because of the manheim auto auction.

I found this case on ebay, its a c7aw-e. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-...spagenameZWD1V

Also found this one with 3.70 gears, track loc posi, 31 spline. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-...spagenameZWD1V

Not the best posi I'm sure, but I think it will hold me off for now.

Re: Ford 9 noob question

Same link for both.

The C7AW-E is very common. There's probably about a million of them out there. Sort of like 350 SBC blocks or TH350 transmissions.

The trac-loc is Ford's name for limited slip like GM's posi. Like any other brand, there's always an aftermarket replacement available.

Look around in local buy/sell papers or check out local swap meets. Check your local 4x4 clubs also. Someone may have what you want for sale.
----------
9" diff info pages. Don't get hung up on trying to find an N case. They are good but they're not indestructible. The run of the mill case I use is still surviving.

Re: Ford 9 noob question

Thanks, good links. You've been a big help. I can't wait to get it in the car and actually push that pedal down.

That third member I was looking at is only at 100 bucks and a few hours left. Looks like I could put this whole deal in for under 1300 bucks. Saving me a thousand dollars. Thats about what I figured it would cost to build one if your thrifty minus all the time for fabbing.

I got just what I need Steve, thanks again.

Re: Ford 9 noob question

Yea theres a few on there, but they're much more expensive than ebay. Most stock third members go for around 350 bucks. I just need to find one with a posi and around 3.70 gears.

Just trying to help. Look around enough and you'll find a deal, there was a carrier with 3.50 and full spool for $250 just the other week.

Re: Ford 9 noob question

A posi is at least 200 bucks used. I'm putting a 1350 yoke on it, should I opt for the 35 spline or would 28 be fine?

I appreciate the help Johnny

Re: Ford 9 noob question

If you are talking spline count for the pinion, if you go with a 35 spline, you will need a special ring and pinion, as well as support. You will end up putting a lot more cash into a used unit then.

Re: Ford 9 noob question

the 28 spline pinion will work fine, if you go 35 then you`ll need the big support and a pro gear...around 500 together to go that route.

Re: Ford 9 noob question

My pinion is a 28 spline. A good upgrade though is going with a Daytona pinion support. It uses a much larger inner bearing.
