i just got my 89 iroc with a 383 stroker back from the dyno shop but it blew 3rd and 4th gear. it has a 700 r4 trans with the stock rear end for now. its putting out about 375 hp to the wheels. what is a good trans setup to put in it that isn't too expensive??????
Building a high HP engine means building the entire driveline to handle the power. Don't expect anything stock to survive much above factory HP levels if abused. Your differential may or may not survive. Your only options are to run it until it breaks or spend $2500+ for a 9" or 12 bolt designed for third gens.
As for the transmission, it depends what you want to do with it. Do you want strictly performance? Do you want an OD gear? A TH400 will take about anything you can throw at it but it's a little more difficult swap. A 4L80E is even better with an OD gear but because it needs a computer to operate, it can be a $3000+ swap. It also weighs more than twice the weight of a simple 2 speed powerglide.

I have the 700r4 with a pro built rebuilt kit in that can handle 650 ponies. So far no problems. The kit only cost 500 bucks. Talk to Dana at pro built he will hook you up. For the rear end I would go with a Strange 12 bolt, at Spohn they only cost 1927. I am putting one in my car in about a week or so. All said you can do both for under 3 grand. Just my

you cant buy the strange 12 bolt for that unless you just want a spool. Add 550bux to that for a posi, then more for other upgrades.
