I have a 700r4 in my Jeep that is having some shifting issues and after a lot of searching, I'm still in need of some help. I have had issues with this tranny not kicking down, however it has shifted firm and at the correct time. In an effort to correct the passing gear problem, I put a pressure gauge on the tranny and found that my line pressure was low, 70 psi. I bought a longer throttle valve spring and new throttle valve plunger and installed it earlier this week. Simultaneously, I found that the hook that the TV cable attaches to was bent. This prevented the cable from fully pulling in the plunger. After this was corrected, the tv cable was reset and I verified that the plunger was fully engaged at WOT. Of course it was now also slightly more depressed at idle with the slack out of the line. Now my line pressure is at 130-150 PSI in park at idle. I thought all was good until the tranny would either not shift out of first, or was very quick to kick down if I did get it to 2nd or 3rd. Does my governor now need to be recalibrated? Can my line pressure by to high at idle or the TV cable to tight? Any help would be great, thanks.

This also seems to sound like my new tv spring is too long, or long spring syndrome. Could this be the case? Once I get the correct spring, pressure, tv cable relationship correct, Will I need to adjust the governor. Is there any way other than pressure reading to find out if the starting position of the tv plunger is correct? Like many of you, I'd like to drop my trans pan as few times as possible.

Sounds like your tv spring or your cable is missajusted and the presure should not be 130 to 150 at idle , At idle it shold be around 70 to 80 psi and as the throttle increases it should rise up to from 170 to 230 at WOT depending on the boost valve installed in the pump.
I checked my tv cable and it was hung up and not ratcheting out. I re set it and the idle pressure is right at 80 psi. I will now shift through the gears and kick down. However it is still not shift great. At light throttle it seems to take too long to upshift and when it does, it shifts hard. If I hammer the throttle the engine winds up real high, but it seems like it's slipping or free wheeling. Now that I have the cable set correctly, should I start looking at the governor?
Well I have installed my new cable, and I have a new dilemma. Setting the cable by the factory throttle body method leaves me with high pressure at idle. I'm currently seeing between 100-120 psi at idle. Obviously this leaves me with late hard shifts, if any. It also causes inappropriate down shifts. It appears the new TV valve spring I installed may be too long. Can the tv cable be set by line pressure? Do I have to find a shorter TV spring and install that first? Too complicate things further, I had the governor professionally set up when the TV link was bent and I probably had a low line pressure condition. Let me know what you think.
