What happens if I over fill the trans

I just did a motor swapp and I was refilling the trans because most of the fluid went all over teh shop floor. I put about 4 quarts in and checket with the dipstick and found that I had overfilled. I didn't have time to pull the pan and redo the trans fluid, gasket, and screen ( I was out of town). I drove it for about 150 miles home. Is my trans going to givew or should I get to it when I can. I notoced that it was kinda like driving with the clutch halfway in (if it was a manual trans) all the time. THe trans is an 87 700r4.

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

if its way overfull more than a quart it will possibly spew fluid out the vent and also may trun up air and cause low line presure and slipping possible damage

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

Is there any way to get the excess fluid out without dropping the pan and replacing gaskets? How long before damage happens?

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

Overfilling can be dangerous for the reasons mentioned.

If you go to a local hardware store, (we have Canadian tire) i dunno what the equivalent would be for you guys, Lowe's or Walmart maybe?

But get one of those gas syphoner's they make for cottage go-ers. You stick one end in the portable gas tank, and the other in your gas tank, and theres a little pump you squeeze to get it started. Costs like $5 or something. But you could just suck some up out of the dip stick tube.

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

If you undo a tranny cooler line and crank the motor over that will drain enough ATF out of the tranny with out taking the pan off

Not a bad idea. I still want to know if I have already damaged my trans though. How can I tell?

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

Is should not damage it the transmission. I had Cottman Transmission change my fluid and they forgot to put in the additive so after they changed the fluid they also added the additive I had asked for so it was over a by a full quart and all it did was blow out my rear seal when I took out the seal fluid shot out like it was under high pressure, I let it bleed off the extra quart and replaced the seal with no other problems.
I have learned to check my fluid level now when I have any other person do service on my auto.

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

Alright. I got the fluid drained to the correct level now. The car still doesn't feel like it is hooking up when I nail the gas though. The engine revs very quickly past 2000 rpm but I never get set back into my seat and the wheels never break free. What could be up? I just swapped the motor. Could the trans cable on the carb be the problem? I had to modify the bracket to make it work with the summit intake manifold (piece of S). None of the throtle cable bracket holes were in the right place on the manifold except the manifold to head bolt.

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

I lost overdrive this morning. I put up another post about it. I need some help quick. This is my daily driver and I don't want to have to swap the trans.

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

Sounds like it could be a hung TV valve. Had that happen to me a couple times, then i would not get overdrive. This tranny will not shift into OD past half throttle unless modified. It uses line pressure from th tv for shift timing if its stuck open it will act all messed up.

I read ur other post about this and the plug for the TCC solenoid should be at the rear on the drivers side of the tranny a couple inches in front of the speedo cable. If its not hooked up and the converter isn't locking you could overheat the tranny and blow it. Did that on my 87 when i swapped in the 350 went threw 3 trannies in 6 months before i put in a manual lock kit and a separate trans cooler.

But back on point if you know that the throttle bracket is wrong on the carb my guess is that the tv cable has been pulled to far out and the tv valve is hung up. That problem tends to get worse with each older model of this tranny especially the pre 87 ones. The only real way I know to fix it is to drob the pan. You will see it right away when you look to where the cable is coming in. You probably won't be able to tell just by checking the cable but you could try that first. see how much travel it has and if it springs back smooth or not. Hope this helps you out.

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

when yopu over heat and blow a tranny, that's pretty unmistakeable right? I just don't want to have something ruined in my tranyy and be driving sround with it. Could cause more damage.

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

yeah it is . the way this tranny works you will usually lose third and od at the same time and it will shift from second to third and just skyrocket the rpm's. the wat i understand this tranny is first and second, and third and fourth share clutches and bands so if those go out you lose both gears at once. again not totally sure on how it actually works but when i blew all of my trannies i lost third and fourth at the same time all 3 blowups were identical to eachother.
and driving a car with only 2 gears and 3.73's in the rear end ain't fun. try 4000 rpms at 45 mph. Don't know if others have had different symptoms as mine though.

I got overdrive back. It was working when I drove for lunch. It won't stay engaged under any load though.

Re: What happens if I over fill the trans

I've been following the thread about the torque converter lock-up stuff. I did butcher my wiring harness pretty bad. Could this be my problem? I deleted the AC, Smog pump, EGR, and some random sensors
