87 trans am 9 or 10 bolt?

Hey guys, i've stumbled over a few questions of my own. i'm not the 3rd gen master by any means but i do know my fair share. one thing i'm just learning about in research and talk with others. i've always thought my 87 gta had a 3.23 pozi rear. disc. and a 10 bolt. but i've been hearing back and forth a few times about limited edition 9 bolt rear ends. before i start upgrading my rear end i definately need to learn a few more things. so if you would. does anyone really know much about the 9 bolts? and how do i tell if mine is either or? Thanks guys, i know my questions will be answered.

Re: 87 trans am 9 or 10 bolt?

i would assume it would be possible for me as well. it was originally a 350 tpi with a 700r4. you have any idea on the specs for a stock 9 bolt?

I know it's Borg-Warner and it's 3.27

That's about the most I know about it. LOL

Re: 87 trans am 9 or 10 bolt?

#1...ALL GTAs came stock with 9-bolts stock....no ifs, ands or buts about it. The 9-bolt was part of the GTA package.

#2...Look at the center rear end cover..Count the bolt heads. 9=9-bolt, 10=10 bolt

Really...It's that simple. Also, even faster, but no guarantee a 10-bolt hasn't had its cover modified...A fill plug. 9-bolts have them, 10-bolts don't.
