After looking for rear ends and considering options I do not think I can afford to purchase a new 9" or 12" rear. I am against going with a 4th gen because it is a little wider than factory.
I read the tech article on builing up the stock 10 bolt and have a few questions.
I am putting in a 383 LT1 with heavily ported heads and intake and also doing a T-56 swap. If I were to rebuild the stock rear as said in the article do you expect this rear to hold up ~450hp? This car will not go to the drag strip but I will have some fun on the street
Anyone have any experience/advice on building up the stock rear? Once I buy rear brakes and various suspension components it will be tough to get a new beefy rear end without having wasted all the suspension parts or I would have to custom fab alot of stuff which I do not have the tools for.

If you use the 28 spline Eaton posi and Moser axles, along with a good USA made gear set and other quality parts then the rear end will have a better chance of survival. The most important part is to get the pinion depth, backlash and bearing preload set just right. As for handling your power output, street tires will help, but if you put something sticky on it then it will probably break.
The axle cover is a really important part for strengthening these. I have the summit house brand one, and I really like it. I think it was $220 or so. Maybe it was $170, I totally forget...
If you can, use studs for the main caps. The GM 8.5" housing is supposed to use the same studs. I think thunder racing is the company that sells those...
After doing more research and reading various articles/message boards its becoming more clear that it really wont be worth it because it probably will break and by that time the cost will be the same as getting a new or used 12 bolt. I am currently looking at a strange 12 bolt unless I find something else over the winter.
