How to determine a rear gear ratio PLEASE READ

So i got a rear today in a trade for my wheels, as well as a center console from a TGO MEMBER.

I was told several times that this rear was a posi 323 rear from a 98 camaro that he pulled himself from a freinds car.

Length is 4th gen like stated(measure it and compared to the rear in my car)

Pop the cover off and on the backside of the gear says "canada 1987" YEA I GOT CURIOUS!
Starting turning the yoke and watching the mark that was already on the gear and boy the gear turns 2 and 3/4 turns. indicating 273's from what im told I donno maybe im wrong but I checked a dozen times.

I just want to know if that is the correct way to get a good estimate of what the gear ratio is.
THATS ALL

Since you popped the cover off, either count the teeth on the ring and pinion or get the ratio off the side of the ring gear.

count teeth and then divide as i count the ring teeth and count the pinion teeth

thats the best way, not the easy way but its accurate

also you can mark the ring grar turn the pinion and see how may pinion turns it takes for the mark to come back around

Yes well the ring was already marked. I already turned the yoke and counted 2 and 3/4 turns for the ring to come back to the same position. Im going to pull it out any way JUST to be COMPLETELY certain before I start getting mad.

Yea that does suck. The only thing is I had a guy who was going to give me 200 cash for these wheels. And a guy an hour away wanted 300 for his 342 4th gen rear WITH brakes!!!!!! I would have glady throw the extra hundred on top of my wheels for that instead of this debockle of a trade.

Counted the teeth on the ring and pinion its a 2:73 posi rear. I believe a thirdgen posi unit because it has "canada 1987" imprinted on the side of the housing under the patents. Def not a 3:23 tho! I pmed the guy asking how he thinks I should go about this seeing as im not happy.
I honestly dont know what to do, my gut tells me to go upstate and do something that in the past iv gotten into too much trouble for but my brains tell me to figure this out in a peacefull way in which im finally happy in the end.

Simple method to determine the gear ratio if the rear is opened up. Just READ THE FACTORY MARKINGS stamped on the OD of the Dr Gear. And forget that game, count the teeth or spin the axle. Dumb & Dumber

I said multiple times I counted the teeth. I simply asked the question(already actually knowing how to figure out the gear ratio) to sarcastically bring my situation about my trade to light on the board and get it public. Guess that was just SO hard to understand for some- dumb and dumber.

If for some reason you get stuck with this rear end you can get thick gears for the 2 series posi that you have. Is the posi good? Are the axles good? You might be able to come up with something that you can use if all else fails.

Re: How to determine a rear gear ratio PLEASE READ

Posi and axle seem good. The kid kept telling me its a 323 he pulled form his friends car and he knows it was never rebuilt, but looking at it it has marks on the ring and pinion meaning someone was in their and the cover bolts were already loose and he mentioned having it off before.

Looking at the unit it very well could be a 4th gen 2:73 unit but it still stands that I was told it was a 3:23 rear.

I emailed him asking how he thinks I should handle this situation seeing as im not happy.

I even let him keep the 50 cash(alot more gas money thanthe trip calls for with todays gas prices, plus he was coming down here ANYWAY to pick up a friends car so it really was a freebie for him) he was soposed to give to me as part of the deal because he made the full trip to my house instead of meeting half way.

Depending on what he says ill make my decision i mean I dont want to give him bad feedback/itrader info if he swears he didnt know and he offers to give me the 50 or something to compensate.

That's an Auburn posi. If it's still good you can get a thick gear set and use it. Where are the bearing caps?

Those factory markings include the ratio. My 3.23 had the ratio 13:42 stamped on the ring gear. Dividing the larger by the smaller number gave me 3.23.

I pulled the caps off in an effort to take the unit out. I might end up selling just the unit since this TGO MEMBER (WIll36 ) wants to be silly and make up all kinds of excuses as to why he thinks he shouldnt send me any money to even the deal out and that it shouldnt matter blah blah blah. Some people are so thickheaded.
