Can I use a 700r4 from a 4x4 truck?

Looking to buy a tranny from a wrecked truck. Any complications with this?

The most obvious problem I see, is the front axle drive unit on the tail.....That would hafta be swapped out for a 2W tail.

Other than that, I see no problems.

I'm looking to swap the 700 i have in my TA for one that has a third of the miles and also has a shift kit/torque converter.

So might I be able to use part of my current tranny?

In order to use a 4x4 trans you will have to completely tear down your old 700 and the new one. You have to use the output shaft from your 2wd trans. YOu will have to take the trans completely down to the planetary gearset and disassemble that. Then pull the output shaft and reassemble. Not too hard to do if you lay out the parts as they come apart. You will not have to pull the valve body off. I have had to do this several times. Now would be the time to go ahead and put some new clutches and band in this trans. You can get a kit at your local autozone for about 100 bucks.

Thanks for the reply. So both transmissions will have to be disassembled then?

Yep. I do that quite a bit myself. Probably tear down and rebuild 2-3 a month in my shop. They arent beyond the ability of someone at home, as long as you can pay attention to detail and are mechanically inclined.

Re: Can I use a 700r4 from a 4x4 truck?

just check that the 4wd trans has a similar input drum where the seal fits, and the shaft holes need to match that of the old one on the tip of the shaft where it goes inside the input drum. Also re-use your governor so that your shift points are the same. the shift points of the 4wd are different because of the transfercase and diff combo's.
i agree with ljnowell it can be done tearing both down.
if the shaft holes don't match it'll burn up your trans. not good!!!
