i going to buy a 700r4 from a guy for $200.how do i tell what year tranny it is?i want to know what year it is so i know if it's a 30 spline or a 27 spline.and also if it is a 700r4 and not a 200r4?
Look at the serial number stamped on the case right above the panrail. It will have something like "7YDM" stamped into it. That number is the year. The code listed above is a 1987. You could also pull the pan. If it has just the valvebody, then its '86 and prior. If it has the valvbody, and smaller Auxilary Valvbody w/ a metal tube going to the pump, then its '87 and later.
Oh yeah, and the difference between the 200 and 700, the 700 has a squarish pan, the 200 has "tombstone" shaped pan, w/ a large sump and a small sump. Its hard to explain, but if you see the 200, you will understand.

No, the "YDM" was just an example. yours will probably be something like a "6FHM" or somthing. The first digit is the year, 6 = 1986, 1996, etc... ( you will know if is an '86 or '96, the '96 will be a 4L60-E).
The second usually is the same as the carline. For example, the "7YDM" will most likely be found on a 1987 "Y" body car (Corvette). If the tranny came out of an "F" body, it will have the year digit, and probably an "F" along w/ two other letters.
