A 700R4 VSS will not work with a T5, nor vice versa. But you can swap a T5 cable VSS with a T5 electronic VSS with no problems.
There is a tech article on this site about swapping a 700R4 for a T5 or a T56, but its for a thirdgen. Perhaps there's a Caprice forum that will be more help? Or the Impala SS forum? I know those guys have swapped T56's into their cars and the 91-96 Caprice and Impala are the same style body.

Im on www.Impalassforum.com that swap hasnt been done realy, just talk of it, Most use T56s because they can witstand more than a T5.
a Guy said that I would prolly be spending just as much money to keep it alive, vs getting a T56 what a downer
He's probably giving you pretty sound advice there. A Caprice wagon is a fairly heavy vehicle, and the T5's have enough trouble surviving with just the weight of a 3rd gen f-body. In fact, that's why they usually last longer in the fox body Mustangs versus our cars due to the lighter weight of the stangs. A T56 would live a long, healthy life in your wagon, or a Tremec TKO for that matter.
