Hey, I asked a couple days ago about a clunking sound that comes from my '90 RS 305 and the most common answer was a tranny mount, so I changed the tranny mount yesterday and nothing changed. I really want to get this fixed so any more ideas on what it could be? here are the symptoms Under medium-hard braking it starts clunking multiple times nearing the stop and when you reach the stop and the car stops completely there is another clunk when all the momentum shifts from front to back. when i downshift at anytime it clunks multiple times if i shift to the next gear and don't give it any gas upon releasing the clutch it gives a violent clunk anytime i put it in reverse and move a little it clunks does NOT clunk while turning I was told by the previous owner that he thought it was a clutch bushing, i don't see how this could be if when i brake when i come to a stop i have the car in neutral and it still clunks please help guys, it's really annoying.

Possibly a u-joint on the driveshaft is something I would check.

How do I check the u joint? just look at it and see if it's cracked or broken?

Check your torque arm bushing. Having similar problems but its most noticeable when stopping or shifting from R to drive. its around $20 for the bushing mine should be coming in tomorrow

U-joint: At each end of the driveshaft, grab the shaft near the yoke and try to move it sideways (up, down, & side to side). If the u-joint is bad and causing the noise you're hearing you'll basically be able to rattle it around.

As i stated on your other post. It sounds like your u-joints are going out. Have you replaced them since owning your car?

I had work all day today and have it all day tomorrow, I will put the car back up on jack stands wednesday, i'll check the u joints and the torque arm bushing.

is there any chance it could be the "clutch bushing" that the previous owner said it was?

and no, i have not replaced the u joints in the past 9 months that i have owned the car

Unless you can relate the noise to engaging or releasing the clutch (in neutral and a gear), it wouldn't be the first thing to suspect.

Alright, so I finally found the time to lift my car back up and find out where the sound was coming from and it's the torque arm. Now I'm not sure whether it's the bushing or what but the end of the torque arm that is near the front of the car (not the other end near the rear end) is moving up and down freely in the housing around it, I tried to look and see any holes through the housing that would hold bolts to keep it from bouncing around but did not spot any. How do I go about fixing this problem? is it the bushing? the arm itself? what needs to be fixed? thanks in advance guys.

As 87tpi mentioned, it sounds like the rubber bushing that goes into the housing and surrounds the end of the torque arm has deteriorated and is now missing. If I recall correctly, it's somewhat rectangular in shape.
