406/t56 combo, any flywheel options other than 700173?
I need a flywheel for my 406 t56. Are my options limited to just the centerforce 700173? I've heard Mcleod makes one, anyone have a p/n? Any Aluminum ones? Trying to weigh my options, thanks a lot
Re: 406/t56 combo, any flywheel options other than 700173?
I think I'm gonna ask the machine shop if drilling the lt1 flywheel will be strong enough. Tom400CFI seemed to have success doing this and the new holes were directly to the outside of the originals. If I can get away with having new holes drilled, enlarging the center, resurfacing and throwing a 400 weight on there for around $150 I think I'll do that. By the way your swap thread is dead on; a ton of good info.
Tom you said you had this f/w behind a 305 would you trust one like it behind a pretty stout 406?
Re: 406/t56 combo, any flywheel options other than 700173?
I dont know, if you think about it, the price is actually pretty reasonable. It isnt much more than a regular new flywheel.
I have my flywheel behind the 355 but i didnt have to drill it out or anything, its the centerforce one.
I would imagine drilling additional holes will probably make the center section of the flywheel weaker. I have a hard time picturing how the holes would be outside the 1 pc holes. I thought they were pretty close ?
But 406, T56, and 12 bolt, sounds like a sweet driveline. Why skimp on the parts?
More than the flywheel, youre gonna notice the clutch is the real issue. I think the stock one isnt bad, but there arent as many fancy clutch choices for the 2 pc rear main seal folk.

youre right! I gotta think this one through a little. Tom said that the holes on his flywheel were actually overlapping a little, but he was running it at the track for a long time like that.
Im using a spec stage 3 clutch that I got with the trans, it wont work with my crank?
Re: 406/t56 combo, any flywheel options other than 700173?
It will work. Spec is what most people end up using.
I really wanted the street twin from McLeod, but they sell their own flywheel with that clutch. And ofcourse their flywheel is for a 1pc rms.
Also theres no options for an Aluminum flywheel.
So someone did a writeup about this, but they found out that all the LT1 style T56 use the same pressure plate with a different name or paint.
So any aftermarket pressure plate is the exact same. It basically comes down to the clutch disc itself.
So the shortcut around it is to buy a GM Lt4 PP which ends up being the cheapest, and a Mcleod or whatever you feel is the most aggressive clutch disc.
