I have been doing some shopping looking for a ford 9 inch rear end for my 89 camaro. My issue is that I dont know exactly what I should be looking for. What vehicles have close to the right length for my car? I know I'm going to need to change the spring mounts for coil mounts.

There is a lot more to it than the spring mounts. The torque arm mount is probably going to be the biggest challenge. As for the right width, you are probably going to have to get a truck housing and narrow it to fit the car. One of the problems with the 9 inch is that the pinion offset is usually not right for GM cars. All GM rear wheel drive cars have the pinion offset 1/2 inch to the right from center. You will need to have the housing modified so that the pinion offset is correct, along with the width being correct. Custom axles will also be required so that the width and bolt pattern will be right. You will need to come up with a set of brakes that will work with the housing ends that you use, and then have a center chunk built to your specs.

If you have good fabrication skils and the tools to do the job then go for it. If not then I recommend a housng and axle package from Moser, Currie or one of the other rear end builders. These usually run around $885 plus shipping. I am a Moser dealer and I can get one for you if you need a source.

If you are not set on a 9 inch then I would recommend a 12 bolt instead. The 12 bolt from Moser is very strong, lighter and cheaper than a 9 inch in most cases. The Moser 12 bolt is a bolt in for these cars.
