Didn't find anything specific in search: 91' bird, 305TBI, 700R4 trani.... How can I get out all trani fluid. Or do I only change the 2.5quarts that came out of pan? Capacity says 5 quarts? would like to replace all 5 quarts, but don't won't to start car with pan/filter off trani? The sooner I get help, the sooner you can help me enjoy my saturday! THANK YOU!
Best way to get it all out is with a pressure flush. Alot is stored in the converter, which won't drain. If you can't flush it, the best alternative would be a few iterations of drain/fill/drain/fill/drain/fill until the old fluid is effectively diluted. Adding a pan drain for doing this makes it simple, without one it's a PITA.
Total pan capacity should be 5qts if I remember corectly plus what is in the torque convertor . If your convertor has a drain plug remove it to drain out old fluid then put plug back and put in 4-5qts and run the engine to fill to full .
Total trani capacity IS 5qts. but must of it is in the Torque converter like mentioned above and my T.C. doesnt have a plug, nor does my pan.... Bummer.....

Does sound like it's a PITA.... One site suggested putting on new filter/gasket> put pan back on. Fill 2.5quarts > disconnected bottom trani line @ radiator and run for a second to get another quart or 2 out of the T.C. Any opinions on this? should be ok if I shut her down quick and retop off fluid???? Thank you gentleman for your help/opinions!

Check at your local speed shop.. The trans pan plug kits are cheap and easy to install, especially since you've already got the pan off.. Sometimes I've even ran across them in the chain parts stores.

It's doable, but you gotta be quick.. I was amazed how much volume/pressure is pumped out. If you have help, it would be best if someone could stay at the key to turn it off quick..
Do NOT drain your torque converter if you are not removing it! Putting trans fluid into your transmission will NOT fill it back up!
Are you sure your trans fluid was full when you drained it? It is possible that you may have only had 2.5 quarts in it.
Filter doesn't seem to want to cooperate! seems like it goes half in, but seems "wobbley". Dont want to force it. Put new fluid on gasket. And yes I removed the old gasket that was stuck up there.... doesnt seem like filter is in their very good????? DISREGARD THIS LAST STATEMENT... GOT THE NEW FILTER IN NOW!

Good to hear your on your way to getting it done .
Done!<<<< QUESTION THOUGH>>>> How does the trani pull the fluid from the bottom of the pan? I didn't notice a hose feed to the pan, I'm assuming this is normal cause the trani seems good.... Does the system work on a "vacuum"???? Thanks again for all the help!

The front of the trans that the converter rides in, is a fluid pump. It pulls the fluid up from the pan through the filter you just changed..

Uh, what? Your trans is going to take more like 11-12qts with most in the TC. 5 goes in the pan.
And as for draining the fluid by starting the car with the cooler line disconnected, WTF?!

You are right on the capacity. Thanks for pointing that out for me! Didn't read my manual close enough! I didn't run car with line disconnected. Saw that at another site and for obvious reasons didn't want to chance it! Thought about it though!
