I've read all kinds of posts about tv cable adjustments, and modifications to throttle linkages to use a carb, and burning up the transmission, and custom brackets, etc etc etc.
Frankly, it scares the hell out of me. So much so that I'm thinking of running a th350 just to not have to worry about the cable, either that or coverting to manual valve body on the 700r4 for the same reason.
I'm not worried so much about adjustment of the cable, I've read enough about that, its just between getting the angle of the brackets right, and the throw right so that the throttle cable for the carb and the TV cable are travelling the same distance, etc etc. Its got me stressed out. am I just overthinking it and getting paranoid? or is it as tricky as I think its going to be to get it set up right?
your def overthinking it. i got mine set in literally 5 minutes. and a 700r4 is def better if your using your car as a DD. it gets better gas milage by 2 or 3 mpg and if you get a 350 turbo your going to need a different driveshaft. its cheaper to just set your TV cable. much cheaper.
I can relate to the feeling you have regarding the TV cable.
I've run through several 700R4's with different "shift kits" and such and always had a problem with shift points and a properly adjusted TV cable. The adjustment process is simple however it was the result that I was getting that was unsatisfactory.
So much so that I would alter the adjustment from the factory procedure so that the vehicle was drivable. That is certain death for a 700 as far as I know.
I've eventually (hopefully) found all the right bits and pieces for an absolutely stellar performing trans.
My application is Holley carbed and I purchased the carb bracket (Holley 20-100) and with the TransGo reprogramming kit ( which supplies an upgraded valve body throttle valve spring) this trans is behaving beautifuly.
I have the TV cable adjusted according to factory procedure and with the new kit the part throttle shifts are smooth and seamless while the WOT shifts are firm. (lots of rubber right into the 2/3 shift!).
I wouldn't do a 700 any other way. Except maybe I eventually exceed the capacity of the unit itself in relatively stock trim.

I looked up the Holley 20-100... that would sure make things simple :] thanks. I was originally looking at this http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...Type=Accessory
but the holley looks a LOT cleaner. did you need to modify the "arm" on the carb itself for the TV cable to line up right?
you could always set it to the factory specs, then tighten it up a bit so that it will at least not burn it up...
as a short term fix, thats what i would do...
you could get a constant pressure valvebody, which would ensure the trans would not burn up, and the TV cable would be mainly a shift point adjustment.
