T5 Transmission Options

I know this has been beaten to death in the past, but I can't find anything by searching.........

I'm looking into getting a 350 with a little more power to replace the 305 in my car, but want to know about transmission options.

Can the T5 be built up to handle the 350 or do I need to go the T56 route? I'm trying to stay away from the automatic trans option. Never really liked automatic cars.

I'm looking at the 300-350 HP range, nothing about that since the car still needs to be somewhat reliable.

Re: T5 Transmission Options

There are shops out there that make upgraded internals for the T5, giving it a torque rating of 450 ft-lbs. But the cost is steep enough to consider a Tremec TKO500. If you use the '88-up World Class version, and drive it like your grandparents would, then a stock T5 should live.

If you don't drive like it you stole it, even a non-WC will be fine. Mine has held up without any difficulties behind my 350/330 (I am, however, a four-time grandfather). Sticky tires, dropping the clutch, etc. is a sure end. I've read that regardless of the upgraded internals, the case will still present a problem. Should very spirited driving be your habit, I'd suggest an after market.

Tremec TKO500? Thanks for the suggestion, do you know if it's a direct replacement, or is modification also necessary?

Gotcha.

While I don't drive like a maniac everytime I'm behid the wheel, I enjoy some spirited driving every now and then, enough that it'll need to be a consideration with the transmission option...

Thanks to GM for giving us a transmission that's horrible.......
