The 5th gear synchro went out on my transmission on my way from Binghamton, NY down to the Carlisle Performance and Style show this last weekend. Needless to say, it was painful to have to drive the car in 4th gear with 3.73's out back on the highway (sorry engine!). Anyway, I have been offered a T5 out of an 1988 Mustang. I'm wondering what would need to be swapped in order for this T5 to work in my IROC. A detailed list would be well appreciated. Thanks guys!
you may be able to use the guts out of it but, the case bolt pattern is different and the tailshaft housing is different, and the input shaft is different
I didn't word my question carefully enough. I want to use the T5 I'm being offered from the Mustang as a bolt in replacement for the T5 I have right now, just swap the transmissions. What bellhousing will I need? And what will I need to compensate for the input shaft?
your better off just pulling the tranny, and having it fixed. I dont think the ford t5 will bolt up to the chevy bellhousing. If it does, getting a new clutch (GM 26 spline, Ford is a 10 spline). Not to mention a mustang tranny has a cable clutch compared to a gm which is hydro.
Transmission:
Rockland gear T56, Ram aluminium flywheel, SPEC Stage 2+ clutch, GM slave and master. Rear End:
3:73's, other then that stock until she blows.
Other Mods:
Energy Suspension bushings, Hotchkis SFC, Hotchkis rear LCAs, Front vented rotors, New Ball Joints, New Tie-Rods, New Center Link, New Idler Arm, All Brakes are new, Struts/Shocks. Big Block Fiberglass Hood. Griffen 19X31 Radiator W/ custom shoud. Spohn Trans Crossmember with Adjustable Torque Arm, Spohn Driveshaft. 4th Gen leather Seats. M/T ET street tires....
Points well made. I'm considering pulling it and having it fixed... Either that or simply finding another Camaro T5 to replace it. About how much would it be to have the synchro fixed do you think? (assuming of course that I take the transmission out of the car and hand it to someone and say "fix it")
I can find a new T5 for ~300, would the repair be less than that? Is a WC T5 worth the extra coin? This car is mostly on the street and I do a stoplight launch here and there but my tires don't hook up. Occasionally it's at the track, but again, I don't hook up.
Find yourself a GM T-5 the Ford T-5 will not work. Found this on a Mustang Forum.
The bolt pattern is different. The input shaft length is way different and the chevy version is canted 17* towards the drivers side.
If by some chance you fabricated an adapter plate to mate the 2 together then you'll need to figure out the speedometer cable as the chevy cable does not have the ford end on it and you won't be able to make that connection either. The O.D. of the input shaft is different between the 2 and the pilot bearing would have to be a custom piece as well. Also, because of the different o.d. of the input, a ford splined clutch disc would not fit it, you'd have to mix and match a clutch kit in order to make it work. Last...the shifter is not in the correct position to fit a mustang. The fox body mustang uses the 19 1/2" position which means that if you measure from the front face of the transmission, down the centerline of the tranny to shifter, it would be 19.500" back. Depending on what year Camaro the T5 came out of, it will not be in that location.
(assuming of course that I take the transmission out of the car and hand it to someone and say "fix it")

I have repaired 3 and completely overhauled 2 T5's using a repair manual I found on google that i printed at school using parts from http://www.thegearbox.org/T5.html . I would save your money and repair it yourself.
The problem is taking apart a transmission scares the crap out of me. I don't have a bearing press, what other special tools are required? I mean, I can give it a shot, and the worst that can happen is it won't work I suppose.
All I need to replace as the synchronizer for the 5th gear for now, and maybe I'll attempt a complete rebuild later. How involved is it to replace the 5th gear synchro?
