383 stroker with 700r4

I have an 84 camaro with a 383 stroker in it. I have been hearing that the 700r4 will not hold the 400 horsepower of the motor. But then some say it will. The trans has a 2800 stahl converter and a shift kit and has been freshly rebuilt. Will this trans hold the power of the motor? I use the car for a cruiser and i beat on it once in awhile it is not a strip car. Can anyone give me help.

Re: 383 stroker with 700r4

Depends on a bunch of things, but if you plan on it failing and it doesn't, great. If you plan on it failing and it does, well, you planned on that. Some factors include the internal condition of the trans, your rear axle ratio, how aggressive the converter hits, how well you can hook the power to the ground, and how you drive. A bigger number axle ratio is slightly easier on the trans than a smaller number axle ratio. An aggressive converter with drag radials will hurt the trans mnore than a lazy converter on street radials. And unless you have a dyno sheet proving your engine is at 400 horses, expect that it's actually making less. Even so, 400 hp at sea level is only 328 hp at 4500' elev. where I live. You lose 1% for each 250' elev. Then subtract for the water pump, power steering pump, and alternator.

Re: 383 stroker with 700r4

id say it should be ok
im running a completely stock unit behind mine and its surviving

yes it slips when shiffting but i dubled the horse power goin to it, so if you have a shift kit and a fresh rebuild id think it would be ok
ive also had mine at the track and i dead hooked with no problems

Re: 383 stroker with 700r4

I would recommend installing Vette Servos and a TransGo shift kit. I had an otherwise stock 700R4 with that same setup that I beat the snot out of for two years and it didn't break until I had to drag the truck with a broken rear on the front axel, which sheared the snout off the internal reaction carrier. I rebuilt the trans with parts from a junkyard trans and it soldiers on behind a 450HP 383 spinning 4.88 gears.

What year is the trans and was it ever rebuilt?

Have you checked out Monster Transmissions. They have a 700r4 that they say can hold 700hp. I don't know how much your budget is.

Watch out for those "claims"....... How "good" is the warranty is the real test...
