car shakes bad after stopping

I've got an 87 Trans Am with a carb'd 305 and 700r4 trans. a couple days ago my car started to shake 3 or 4 times after coming to a complete stop, sometimes the shake is hardly noticable, others it's violent, sometimes it won't do it at all. The shake seems to be coming from the rear of the car. I checked the trans and everything seems just fine. don't think it could be a brake issue because it happens after the car has stopped. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sounds like the torque converter is not unlocking. It's intermitten which will make it hard to troubleshoot. You could try unplugging the plug on the side of the case of the trans and driving it for a while and see if the problem persists. If the problem goes away then you know it's the torque converter, since it won't lock up with the plug unplugged.

Re: car shakes bad after stopping

I'll give that a try. it makes sense, when I rebuilt the engine I did away with all the electronics...turns out that was the speedo too. didn't even check to see if it was cable driven or not. didn't care too much, but if I'm correct that means that my torque converter lock up wouldn't work right too, correct? a few weeks before this problem started I started working on rewiring my speedo, it bounces around spurratically, but is never accurate...I think it's been going to the music on the stereo(gnd issue maybe?) this could be making the converter lock up at inappropriate times correct? thanks

If the car had a computer and you removed it then the lockup won't work. The computer controls the lockup from the factory. You can get an aftermarket kit to lock the converter without needing the computer. In fact I have a used one for sale if you're interested. I used it for a while, but eventually switched to a non-lockup converter.
