Dodge Viper T56 Retro Fit for 3rd Gen
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anybody could help me out; I found a pretty good deal on an actual Viper Transmission out of a Dodge Viper and I was wondering if anyone or who makes a retro fit kit to get it into my 3rd gen Camaro?

If you're planning on using it with a T5 bellhousing/clutch/linkage, it will be fairly simple. If you'd like to convert it to the LT1 setup, it might not be worth the cost.
The (T56 - T5 adaptor plate) will mate to the viper mid-plate. The input shaft will need to be machined down to fit the GM pilot. The T5 shifter and location will be the same. You'll need to work with the VSS of the viper or convert it. The Xmem mount will need to be reworked somewhat for mount to the trans, and for relocating the Torque-Arm. Finally, your driveshaft will need shortened, and adapted to the viper yoke.

What's a good deal?
A better option IMO would be to just use an LT1 T56, and if you need extra strength you can upgrade to the Viper spec output shaft. The benefit is that it is still an LT1 trans in every other respect other than you need to run a 32 spline yoke.

But unless you're putting down 1000hp, the viper can be overkill..

Re: Dodge Viper T56 Retro Fit for 3rd Gen
Not entirely true. The viper has a thicker/stronger input shaft, stronger 2nd gear engagement teeth (available in later model T56s also), a stronger 1pc counter/extension shaft, and a very accommodating shifter location for T5 setups. (viper uses a 30-spline yoke BTW)

Re: Dodge Viper T56 Retro Fit for 3rd Gen
You are correct, it is a 30 spline outupt shaft. The input shaft isn't as necked down as a LT1 T56 either, but I've yet to see a T56 break an input shaft. I can't comment on the shifter location relative to a T5, since I swapped my T56 in place of a 700R4, but the placement of the shifter is excellent with the LT1 T56 from an ergonomic standpoint.
You can upgrade the LT1 T56 to handle 900HP and 800 lbs/ft., too.

Re: Dodge Viper T56 Retro Fit for 3rd Gen
Hey guys I got a LS1 Camaro with a T56 that I just trashed with my motor with right round 400hp...So this time while I got it apart Im going to put my heads and cam and all my other toys on there to end up somewhere round 550hp. Whats the best rout to take as far as getting my T56 to hold up to it or just buy a whole different transmission?

Re: Dodge Viper T56 Retro Fit for 3rd Gen
[Probably should have started a new thread of your own, not reopened this one]
The upgrade parts (as some vendors call a "Level-2" upgrade) are:
- Steel 3/4 shift fork
- Billet synchro keys (1&2, 3&4, at least, I like to put them on 5&6 also)
- New set of CarbonFibre Blocker Rings
- Bronze shift fork pads (All 4 forks)
- Performance shimming of the mainshaft and countershaft
This gives the LT1/LS1 MM6 T56s a 700lb-ft rating, over their 450lb-ft warranty rating from the factory. Parts will run roughly $500, plus the labor (if any) to tear apart and rebuild the unit.
The Viper mainshaft will move the rating up to about 800lb-ft, but mostly just helps prevent the output shaft from twisting under hard launches on slicks. Most people won't need that upgrade, and it adds almost $1000+ to the upgrade price.
