i like the 700r4 but you will need a pro to help you do a rebuild, and lots of special tools.

Re: Need help with my 700R4?

I'm sorry, but that's just not the case. I rebuilt my first 700R4 with no prior experience rebuilding automatics and a bare minimum of special tools.

I would recommend getting a Pro-Built kit, as it has all of the parts you will need. Get an ATSG and/or Haynes GM Tranny manual. You will need a good pair of snap ring pliers (both internal and external), a clutch spring compressor (I got mine for about $40 at a swap meet), and a bushing/seal driver set. There are a lot of special tools spec'd in some of the manuals, but you can do without 99% of them. You can even use a feeler gauge as a lip seal tool (I did, with no problems). There are plenty of people here that can help you, and if you go with the Pro-Built kit Dana from Pro-Built will also be a great resource and help.

For years I thought that automatics contained some kind of alien technology that required all kinds of special training to learn how to fix. The truth is that they are just another mechanical part. You don't need to 100% understand how they work in order to rebuild them. You need to be dilligent, careful, and keep everything very, very clean, but if you can do that then you should be fine.

Re: Need help with my 700R4?

Sorry Tony, but I hafta agree with TKO on this one. Though I'd suggest getting the kit from TCI, and certainly don't get it from B&M.

Re: Need help with my 700R4?

i took it to the shop and the mechanic told me it was gonna be $1500 but he was gonna build it like if it was for a corvette he said and. Also he told me that i have to take the car to him for the guarranty would cover the 100,000miles, or do you guys know anyone here who rebuilds transmissions or sells them.

Re: Need help with my 700R4?

If you're in California the only place you should buy a trans is ProBuilt. His site is www.700r4l60e.com and he's in Calamesa, CA. I used one of his kits when I rebuilt my 700R4 and the results are awesome. Dana is super knowledgable, and truthfully the only person I trust with a 700R4 other than myself. His kit is good to at least 575HP and he helped design a lot of the parts that are in the kit. His slightly modified version of the TransGo skift kit is superb. I can't say enough good stuff about Pro-Built.

Check out this link: https://www.700r4l60e.com/store/home.php?cat=20

Pretty reasonable for a ready to go 700R4 if you ask me.
