When I first got my car it was low on tranny fluid, so when I went to buy some, the guy at the shop didn't have III, only IV, and I should use IV because it was newer and a better fluid...
Is this true? What damage can be done... do they mix?
Arrgh! There's no T in Dexron. Look at the label on the bottle. It's Dexron!!
III is just the next step up from II. They're all backward compatible. Type F is also compatible with dexron but I wouldn't personally recommend mixing it.
It's the same as engine oil. Look on the dipstick of an older car. Requires SD grade oil. Or something lower. Current oil is somewhere around SF, SG or SH and maybe higher, I haven't looked. The newer oil is just better blends and will work fine in cars requiring older blends.
Dexron II hasn't been made in over 10 years now. It's all Dexron III. I haven't seen IV yet but I'm sure it'll come out eventually.

LOL I was thinking the same thing. I work as second job at Autozone and there are guys who have worked there for 10 years that don't know how to say it!

That's what I get for being the world's second worst speller and just copying what someone else writes...

I was just at Advance auto this week looking for tranny fluid and I saw a Dexron V. They musta skipped right over IV and went to V because I've never seen IV either.
Dexron v is the new wonder fluid from GM. Interestingly there is a company that sells a bottle of stuff you add to dex3 and it is "converted" in dexV(a highly stable, friction modified fluid blah blah blah)
