Auto Starter on a T5 car?

Tried a search, and got frustrated after 2 pages of irrelevant info.

Simple question.

1978 SBC 350. 1975 SBC starter auto (worked with my 700R4). Why wont my T5 bellhousing fit over it? Is there a different starter i need?

I also have a 1978 SBC T10 starter im going to try, but its a little rustier than the other one.

Was there a different starter for manual trans back then, yes or no? TIA.

Re: Auto Starter on a T5 car?

I have a remanufactured automatic starter in my car, but I managed to get it to fit my T5 bellhousing.

Re: Auto Starter on a T5 car?

I tried the T10 starter, and it has a more slender housing, but its WAAAAAAAAAAAAY off.

It sits very far out to the outside of the block. There was about a 1inch gap between the T5 flywheel teeth, and the starter teeth. Looks like a flexplate would have worked on it though, or a big style flywheel.

I also "made" the auto starter fit the T5 housing. Massaged the inside with a dremel, and it went on nicely.
