whining in neutral

I recently fired her up for the first time. After I put the exhaust together I could actually hear what was going on in the engine bay. I don't know if this is normal for 3rd gen's but it doesnt exist in any other car I've driven. when i have the clutch engaged but the car is in neutral I can hear the input shaft spinning around in there. sounds like a faint whining, similar to that of a supercharger whine but obviously much quieter and subtle. Anyone who has a manual car should be able to tell me whether they hear the sound or not. Maybe i'll take a video of it. maybe I need some tranny oil or something? Also, I'm positive the T5's had synchros but my reverse grinds when I first shift into it. how expensive is a synchro fix if I pull the tranny?

Re: whining in neutral

i have never done the syncro's but it sounds like either your throw out bearing is bad or your input shaft bearing is bad i have seen both but the whining is definately not normal

Re: whining in neutral

the TOB is brand new centerforce one. It may be the bearings on the input shaft, but I was talking to a buddy with an 84 who used to have a T5 as well, he said a little noise from it is normal and that the T5 didn't have any synchro for the reverse gear and 9/10 times it will grind a bit.

ok like i said i wasnt fimilliar with the syncro's i am fimilliar with the whining noise and as i said before if your throw out bearing is brand new then it will be the bearing on the input shaft but it will let you know when it is really bad lol

Ok, well i'll probably run this tranny into the ground. its a borg warner T5 and I've got a 358 with some goodies on it so its probably on the border of the T5's power/torque limits anyways. maybe I'll put a T56 in after.
