My car is due for a rear end fluid change. any tips on getting the fill plug off (9bolt 3.27) since its on top of the diff? how high do i need to get the back of the car in the air? is it possible to drive the back of the car on ramps and do it, or does the suspension need to be hanging? any tips would be great.

The fill plug is a rubber plug in the differential cover. What are you looking at on top of the differential?

On the 9 bolt? Ill double check, but im about 99% sure its on top of the "pumpkin"

I dont have any type of plug on the cover.

Click on this picture. It's a 9 bolt that I built a few years ago. You can see the cover on the bench under the rear end. You can also see the rubber plug sticking through the cover. Clean the grease off of your cover and you will probably find it. As far as I know there is no plug on the top of the housing.

well then i stand corrected. then maybe this is easier than i thought. is it at all possible the cover is aftermarket?

Could be after market, but I haven't seen one. This is the only place that I know of to fill one of these rear ends.

If you got access to a lift, you may want to remove the rear cover to inspect the gears and such. Just a thought and that's what I do when I get the rear end fluid changed. It's a pain in the butt but worth it especially if you catch something before it becomes catastrophic while driving.

I wish i did have access to a lift. To be honest, im a little nervous about going back under it with it on jackstands cosidering what happened 2 weeks ago when i was going to change the fluid.

Stupidly i did it in the driveway which is on a very slight incline. i had the front of the car pointing down the incline, blocked the front tires, jacked up the car under the diff. which made the car move away from the blocks on the front wheel. I put jack stands under the frame and then it started to roll down the incline, which in turn made one of the jackstands collapse. it prob would have been ok once it hit the blocks, but now i really dont want to go under the car. I guess its a lesson learned, no matter how slight the incline dont do work on an incline.

your fill plug is on the cover,it is a rubber plug.and jack it up so the suspension hangs.there is no drain you will have to pull the cover.
