Rounded top bellhousing bolt

I'm trying to take out my 700R4. The top passenger side bellhousing bolt was givng me trouble, I eventually rounded it off with a socket. Anybody have to deal with this before? 6 pt socket still spins, and there's no way I can get a 14mm over it.

Have you got enough room to grind the head off?

Not a chance, I can barely fit my skinny arm up to even touch the bolt, let alone get a tool up there.

He probably doesn't have room to do that either. First, throw out those 12 point sockets and try a 6 point.

Re: Rounded top bellhousing bolt

Are these the right bellhousing bolts?!?!?! They look like what used to be holding together my wooden play structure. Just doesn't look very GM to me, but it's what I took out (and what is still on there, rounded off).

Re: Rounded top bellhousing bolt

You can sometimes pound a standard onto a metrix rounded off bolt n vise versa. Them bolt removers are good but there is a point where they don't works as most kits only come with 5-6 sockets that "fit" every size. Both standard n metric. They don't always fit though, been caught where it was to small or to big before. Thats when ya ram a cheap socket on there. Then chuck it and the bolt into the woods once off

Re: Rounded top bellhousing bolt

Those may just be standard hardware store bolts, which probably are softer making them easier to strip.

Why are you removing them? if it is to remove the trans than I would reccomend installing one of the easier to remove bellhousing bolts, then droppin the crossmember, this should allow the trans to and motor to hang a few inches and give you some room to put on a six point 14mm american made socket.

If you are pulling the motor, than just take the trans with it.

Re: Rounded top bellhousing bolt

If you can get that irwin bolt extractor on it, it should get that sucker out. I used one to removed a rounded cylinder head bolt from a motor I was getting from the junkyard, if it can get a head bolt out it should be able to loosen just about anything.

Re: Rounded top bellhousing bolt

get the "gator socket" it looks like a regular deep socket filled with little pins that move up when put on to a bolt and it grabs everything ive never had a problem getting a completly rounded off bolt with this.. and its only like 5 bucks.. go to sears they'll have everything u need..

Why not? Drop the tranny x-member, use a 3ft extension with a universal, he should have all the room in the world.

find someone with a blue tip wrench ( oxygen & acetleyne ) to blow the head off the bolt. if they know what there doing it will take about 10 seconds.

Re: Rounded top bellhousing bolt

I cut the head into a T shape with a dremel from the top allowing the washer to fall off. Then I could grab the T shape with a large inverse Torx bit and backed it right off.
