Front Pump Seal Leak, Can I Tell If The Pump Is Bad
Hi guys,
My front pump seal leaks about a grapefruit sized puddle over night. I'm fairly sure it's the front pump seal as the car has 172k. My mechanic will change the seal for $100, but he says the front pump will probably be bad as well, and it'll have to go to a transmission shop for that. Is there anyway for me to tell if the pump is bad with the transmission in place? I'm confident my mechanic won't just slap a seal on and say it's fixed, but he's not available til next Tuesday so I'd kinda like to know how much cash I'll be set back now. The car drives fine, although it might have slipped once when I floored it (before I new the seal was bad), but it might have been wheel hop. BTW, how much is an average price for getting the front pump rebuilt, and if it's bad should I get the whole thing rebuilt? I've only got about $600, so I'm on a tightish budget.
Alex

with that mileage your best bet is to pick up a used transmission with low mileage, around my area they go for $250 with about 85k on them.i just went through that on my caprice.took a shot with a seal and had to pull it again and put in a trans.it had 192k.
